I now have the app working as well, however; the problem persists.

I think that means your USB serial cable went away during the transfer. What chipset USB serial cable is it? Maybe someone else who understands the Prolific/FTDI driver more can comment.
Tom KD7LXL
It’s not the connection as it consistently works for download from HT and consistently dies on upload. Worse yet, when it stops mid cloning, the app cannot be canceled. I can force quit it but then the usb serial port is no longer usable and the machine must be rebooted to try again.

As far as trying "another Chirp program" due to a driver issue, I’m not sure where that would be found or what to try.

OK, Now the only thing left is the USB_Serial driver. Mine shows up on the system info app as
FT232R USB UART:
Product ID: 0x6001 Vendor ID: 0x0403 (Future Technology Devices International Limited) Version: 6.00 Serial Number: AI03E0C2 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: FTDI Location ID: 0x14100000 / 20 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 90 Extra Operating Current (mA): 0
So I loaded the latest FTDI driver from the FTDI website, and everything has been fine since.
A friend of mine had a cheap interface with a chip from Prolific, and I had a heck of a time to find the right driver, but I made it work eventually when I used a driver from Prolific website.
So your mileage might vary.
Good luck, Jean-Paul N1JPL

For Prolific drivers, look for 3.2.0.0. You can find this at www.miklor.com.

I tried downloading the latest FTDI driver (FTDIUSBSerialDriver_v2_4_2), installed it, and rebooted OSX. There was no change to the USB serial driver info in system report. So, I was already running this driver, or I need to do something else to have it use this driver, or…? Also the FTDI site shows 2 different types of drivers are available, the one I used and this one (D2XX1.4.4). What I find interesting is the one direction from the radio works flawlessly and te other direction (to the radio) fails after it is theoretically 3/4 done. Usually drivers fail in more definitive ways but clearly others are able to use Chirp bi-directionally with the VX-5R. By the way, for what it is worth, I have no trouble with upload and download to a Btech UV-5R. Of course that it is a different cable.

The FTDI driver will not be selected when you plug your cable. You need also the Prolific driver. Try installing the 1.6 first.

I (again) installed what appears to be the universal driver(for Mac OSX) from the site mentioned below and kextstat says:
157 0 0xffffff7f80e07000 0x6000 0x6000 com.prolific.driver.PL2303 (1.6.0) F6A6805D-685D-3E6D-BF81-106EBBC0A386 <126 51 5 4 3>
Still no luck.
