[chirp_users] Vista problems
Hi I am having trouble with Chirp. I have chirp running a windows XP home desk top and it works great. I have it running on windows 7 Laptop and it works great. My son windows Vista Laptop and we are having trouble openning a file or saving it. When I have a file download from the UV5R I can enter anything that I want to. but I can not save that file. When I click "save as" it does nothing at all. If I close the program it opens a little window open and asks if I want to save, delete or cancel, I select save and nothing happens. I can also click open from the file drop down and nothing opens or happens. I think this Vista machine is the problem, what do you think Thanks Dave Barber
I think the first thing I'd check is to make sure that the user account on the Vista machine has full read/modify permissions in whatever folder you're trying to save the file to. When I moved a lot of files and folders from a Win7 laptop to a Win8 machine, the Win8 laptop wouldn't let me save anything to the transferred folders until I went in and fixed the permissions--and never said anything. It just failed silently, as you're seeing now. Since Win 7 and 8 are updated versions of Vista, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was a permissions problem.

Might have to go to the ACL and take ownership recursively of all the files in the Chirp folder. Right click on folder, Security, take ownership or something like that.

Did Vista have a compatibility mode? I don't remember because when I got out of the IT profession XP SP3 was the dominant operating system for desktop workstations. I never messed with Vista the next OS I had the guts to try was Win 7 which isn't too bad except for these usb to serial cables and the way Win 7 always wants to download the latest WHQL certified drivers that don't always work. So if Vista has compatibility mode try running Chirp in XP SP3 mode. If not then I don't know what else you can do.

Maybe elementary, but make sure you first create an initial template for CHIRP by Downloading the image from your UV-5R to your computer.
Update that spreadsheet, then upload it back to the radio.
You may have already done this, but many overlook that step.
I have a Vista machine and have never had a problem.
