[chirp_users] Problems with Windows 8.1
Ok, the Win_Driver_Prolific_3_2_0_0 with a FTDI chip cable and Chirp (or UV-3R tranceiver software), all work great on my XP and W7 machines.
Installing the same driver and cable on my W8.1 Laptop produces the following error:
This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Not Enough Quota} Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available to complete the specified operation.
Any suggestions on how to solve the W8.1 problems? Does W8.1 require a special driver? cable?
Thanks, Mike K5HUM@ARRL.NET

Mike,
You don't use a Prolific driver with an FTDI chip.

Ok, Im confused, The setup I mentioned works fine on my XP and W7 machines why would it not work on W8.1???

Mike,
Visit this page: http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
Scroll down to step 12. When the programming cable is plugged in, you should see and entry similar to the 2nd image above step 12.
If it ishows Prolific, then you must have the Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver installed as shown in the image above step 12. Follow the instructions to install and then select (as shown in steps 7 through 11) the v3.2.0.0 driver.
If is shows an FTDI chip, then the correct driver should have installed automatically. You might try uninstalling the driver using Device Manager and allowing Windows to install it again. Or you could download the latest driver from the FTDI website and install it that way. http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm

It doesn't help us help you when you just say "no joy". What driver is device manager showing you have? How about attaching a screen capture of the driver tab of the programming cable?
Jim KC9HI
Jim,
I was not trying to be cute, just frustrated. I did not just fall off the turnip truck and have been around Windows quite a few years.
The driver is a Win_Driver_Prolific_3_2_0_0. The error being reported is:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Not Enough Quota} Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available to complete the specified operation."
The SAME driver and USB to serial cable work fine on my 64b W7 machine just not on my W8.1 64b Dell D630.....which accounts for my frustration. Im not sure what other info I can provide thats relevant but I would like to solve the problem.

Open Device Manager Remove Old Com ports and USB devices: Proceed to step 2 of this tutorial. When that is done, still in Device manager, navigate to your problem USB cable (it should have a yellow exclamation mark on it) Remove it, and then reinstall the driver If that driver will still not work then: Right click on it, and choose update driver. Click Browse my Computer... Click Let me pick from a list... A list of all of the drivers should show. Choose the oldest Prolific driver on the list. I chose version 3.2.0 from 2007 Install it, and you're done! If you are using PuTTy, note that when you connect, the COM port may not work as expected. What you should do, if you need to, is go into the Serial options in the main PuTTy window, and turn off flow control.
Everything should work right now.

Still does not work. To check, I uninstalled the Prolific 3_2_0_0 driver on my good W7 machine, followed your instructions, re installed, and everything worked fine.
I then used the SAME procedures and driver on the W8.1 machine and got the same dang error. Im sure its something specific to W8.1 or my Dell 630 Laptop, but its still eluding me.
Since I can program with Chirp on my UV-3R and W7 machine, I will leave it with that. Thanks for trying.

Are you running this as Administrator on your computer? I have other programs using APRS not work on our Search and Rescue team computers because the person that set up the computers had us signing in as a different user. As soon as we said run as Admin, it worked. www.dmapper.com.

If you really have a Prolific chip you would use a Prolific driver, but not so for FTDI chip.
Assuming you really have a prolific chip, there are some chips Prolific decided not to support in Win 8.1 64-bit, even if they are genuine Prolific chips. For a while, I was able to roll back the drivers and get them to work anyway. But recently they seemed to have changed something that causes the old driver to fail. Note that this even happens with know genuine Prolific chips!
I finally gave up and built my own FTDI cable with parts from Sparkfun. Works every time!
