[chirp_users] MacBook Air will not talk to UV-5RPlus
I have a MacBook Air running OS 10.9.2. I just installed CHIRP 0.4.0 and Python runtime and tried to program my UV-5RPlus. I get an error message saying that the radio did not respond. I checked the cable (Prolific chip) and found that the computer recognized it. I should note that I have used this same cable to program the same radio on a Windows 7 desktop PC, so I know the cable connects properly to the radio. Everything works, except I can't download data from my radio. Any thoughts or solutions?
Bob DeFranco
Bob, can you tell me how you verified that your computer recognized the the cable? Thanks.

Steve,
I found the following information in System Information after the cable is plugged in (disappears when cable is unplugged):
USB-Serial Controller:
Product ID: 0x2303 Vendor ID: 0x067b (Prolific Technology, Inc.) Version: 3.00 Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc. Location ID: 0x14200000 / 12 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 100

Bob,
Per below, Mavericks is seeing your cable, so that removes the capable as a problem. CHIRP almost certainly not your problem. This narrows the issue down to this being a driver issue. It is almost always is the darned driver and finding the right one.
I suggest that you try the Mac OS X, new to Mavericks, built in serial driver. You select: /dev/cu.usbserial-A702RBLF in CHIRP
I’ve been told by FTDI support (I’m not using Prolific) that all other drivers must be removed with attempting to use Apple’s new built in driver. If you have multiple drivers installed that could be your problem even though the right one might be there.

I have Lion, so I can't comment on Mavericks. CHIRP works great for me as installed with Python and the USB to serial driver I have, whatever it is. The USB to serial driver was the last thing I need to zero in on to make it all work. It works great, and that is why I am reluctant to change anything at all! Good luck in getting it working in Mavericks, that is not necessarily an "upgrade" from Lion, no matter what Apple says!

Pete,
I suspect it IS a driver problem of some sort. However, I should say that I did not install the Prolific driver, the OS just recognized the cable when it was installed. When I open CHIRP, the dropdown menu in the download dialog does not show anything other than a Bluetooth port, suggesting that CHIRP doesn't see the cable or its driver.

Read. Download the Generic PL-2303 that I use in Mavericks. I started out with this driver in Lion. Upgraded to Mountain lion, then to Mavericks all 64 bit. The original package installer was in Spanish. Jens, one of the Chirp programmer created this package but it's not signed by Apple. so you right click to choose to install. This lets you install unsigned packages. The instructions are on the page too.

The cable port will open when you plug the USB end in. It will show in the place OSX allows you to see your network connections. Don't have my MacBook Pro here so I can't guide you to that dialog in the GUI but you can confirm it without typing stuff in a terminal. So look around in your settings you should find the network control panel.

Yeh me too with the Yahoo DMARC crappola. I still have a few Yahoo groups that the Yahoo account works fine. I guess that was their reason, not for spam, but for email lists other than their own. The spam still gets through fine. I had ten spams in my spam folder today so far. And gmail stuck you into its spam filter so I marked it not spam and a popup asked me if I wanted gmail to look at the headers so I get good email less frequently in my gmail spam folder. So far it's put maybe 5 messages in spam that I had to mark not spam. I guess others who switched to gmail also had similar actions to the Chirp list. One thing I miss is a copy of my messages, gmail doesn't allow that for some odd reason. But I have the URL for the message archive of the day bookmarked and I can quickly check there.
Glad you got your driver sorted out, have fun.

Oh and visit your setting of the list and turn off the send me a copy feature. I'm sure gmail just bounces those and you may accumulate enough points on bounces where you will get bounced off the list again :)

Oh and visit your setting of the list and turn off the send me a copy feature. I'm sure gmail just bounces those and you may accumulate enough points on bounces where you will get bounced off the list again :)

It is most likely the USB to serial adapter software. I THINK what I have on my MacBook Pro is PL2303_Serial-USB_on_OSX_Lion.pkg, at least that is what I have saved in my download folder.

I read that suggestion in a previous thread. I was concerned that a driver for Lion might be problematic for Mavericks. Also, as I mentioned, the cable shows up as a Prolific USB to Serial Hub on the System Information when it is plugged in. I.e., it is being recognized by the computer. I'm not saying your wrong, but I'm not sure why I need to do the thing you suggest.
