The cable port will open when you plug the USB end in. It will show in the place OSX
allows you to see your network connections. Don't have my MacBook Pro here so I can't
guide you to that dialog in the GUI but you can confirm it without typing stuff in a terminal.
So look around in your settings you should find the network control panel.
