[chirp_users] Lighthouse Radio Network HELP!
Hello there! I represent a group that has been restoring the Cape Decision Lighthouse in southeast Alaska for the past twenty years, and one of our projects this summer is to establish a GMRS radio network on our property. The radios are all getting shipped to Alaska now, but the person who was going to help us program them is no longer available! I am writing to see if anyone here might be willing to help us, potentially by writing and sending us the Chirp files needed to get us up and running. There is no internet or cell coverage where we’re going, but I’ll have a brief opportunity this coming Friday to sit with the radios and a computer and Chirp before we leave for the lighthouse on Saturday. The system includes: (3) Baofeng handhelds (1) Baofeng mobile base (1) Retivis repeater I can send send more details about makes and models and any other information you may require! My hope is that someone on this list can can help ensure that the base station and handhelds and repeater can all communicate with each other with Chirp files I can easily upload into each radio. Please send word, and thanks so very much! Happy to make a donation somewhere to get this done in time... Thanks for your consideration! Steve
Chirp you download from here:https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ Can't send you the file as you didn't say which computer OS you were using.
To use GMRS, all of those users NOT in your immediate family (and you) will need to apply for a GMRS license from the FCC. GMRS is only for non-commercial use. You might be better looking at MURS.
Whichever, you will need type approved, pre-programmed radios, not generic Baofengs or similar.
The rules seem somewhat undefined on repeater hardware except that you are limited to 50 watts.

Howdy Ken -
We’ve ordered three BTech V1s and BTech 50X1, as well as a Retevis RT97 from myGMRS.com and are looking for someone to write the Chirp files that we can upload into the radios so that they’ll all work together, as opposed to trying to program them on our own.
Is this something that you might be able to help us with? I can get the channels programmed into the repeater from myGMR.com or I’ll see them for myself on Friday! Thanks again, hope to hear back from you! Steve

The BTECH GMRS-V1 and BTECH GMRS-50X1 radios come permanently programmed with all 30 GMRS frequencies. There is no need to program them with CHIRP.
Jim KC9HI
Hi Steve, You only need to put the frequencies into a CSV file with Excel or a program like Libra Office. I might have a CSV file with what you need, and then you download the file from the radio, then import the CSV file you want, and then upload to the radio. Not sure how well a Mac works for this, best done in Linux or Windows. That assumes that your spreadsheet has the exact required number of fields in the correct order with the correct names.
Programming from a spreadsheet that wasn't downloaded from Chirp for the appropriate radio is a recipe for disaster.
DON'T DO IT.

I'm sorry Nigel, but that's utter nonsense. The format for CSVs can be a bit finicky to generate, but our local emcomm group handles several hundred amateur radio channels exclusively using CSV. The beauty is that there are a multitude of different radios which all can be programmed using the same source. It works beautifully. There are instructions about how to use CSV properly on the wiki.

It works for your emmcomm because they know what they are doing. The original post came from a beginner who doesn't.
Anyway, having programmed one radio, you can import it's .img file into Chirp and program any other model of radio with that one .img file. No need to use CSV files.

Thanks so much for the note Nigel. My wife and I will be sharing a license, as will another couple who are getting a license, and another volunteer member will be getting a license as well.
I’ll be using a Mac to work with Chirp.
Steve

The issue you have is what channel/frequency and tone your repeater is set for. Once you know that, setting the mobile and HTs to use the right tone is a trivial matter, able to be set on the keypad.
Reminder, the radios are all pre-programmed for every frequency, it is the repeater that is the wild-card.

Understood! The repeater arrived in AK today and I expect to learn the repeater channels this evening! I also realize how easy this will be once I get some practice. We were going to get training on all of this prior to going into the field but unfortunately that can’t happen anymore and we want to make 100% sure everything is going to work well together.

Reminder, the radios are all pre-programmed for every frequency, it is the repeater that is the wild-card.

Thanks so much for the note Nigel. My wife and I will be sharing a license, as will another couple who are getting a license, and another volunteer member will be getting a license as well.
I’ll be using a Mac to work with Chirp.
Steve

Once you have the repeater frequency and tone requirements simply download from each radio into CHIRP and save them as a native CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file named in a way to keep them separated by radio. Email them to me and I would be happy to program the "tone" and add and modify power-on message and any channel names as you desire. Just include that information with the "image" files.

The above-mentioned radios ((3) BTECH GMRS-V1 and (1) BTECH GMRS-50x1) are FCC Part 95 Subpart E certified for GMRS use. They come permanently programmed with the 30 GMRS channels. These in-firmware channels cannot be deleted or the frequencies modified by CHIRP or locally by the keypad. Even a RESET will not remove these channels.
At the very maximum all you would have to do is configure the RX/TX CTCSS tone (or RX/TX DCS code) to match whatever selective squelch may be configured in the repeater. All easily done in-the-field using the radio's keypad and built in menus.
Although CHIRP will allow you to configure some global settings that aren't available from the keypad, there is absolutely no need to use CHIRP to program them for use with a GMRS repeater. Just selected the appropriate repeater channel (23 - 30) and press the [PTT] button.

Hello there!

Hullo Steve,
As you've seen from every second reply, the handhelds and mobile style radio are pre-programmed GMRS radios (_no_ programming on your part.) I had a look to remind myself about the Retevis RT97 repeater.
There are in fact two models. I didn't notice in any of your messages which your's is, the GMRS version or the "stock version", however I'd hope that a reputable shop would provide the former in your order. If it's the GMRS model you're golden (no programming on your part, only selection of a channel.) If it's the stock one then I'd hope they'd have set it up on a GMRS frequency pair (no work on your part except to know which GMRS channel it supports.)
A check on the model and that it's set for GMRS should be straightforward. If it's not so labelled or documented ask your shop.
I've done a map recce of your destination. I would not bother with "tones". At all. Ixnay the tones.
1. Extra potential headache. One that may generate a human problem on site if something isn't matched.
2. Use of these tones do not provide _any_ form of privacy or security, regardless of how they are marketed/labelled.
3. You're so far from anyone that on UHF they're effectiveness for what they are best used for seems a moot point.
You're neighbouring topography is impressive, and unless that repeater and it's antenna is set on the high point north of you, you'll be operating very locally. In the area of the light and little more.
4. I suspect that you'll find you may cover much of the area around the light without the repeater. If you're going north, say to the beach in the Tongass, the radios, even with a repeater in the area of the light will not support that communication expectation.
A very interesting project overall. I hope you have a sat phone and a good marine VHF installed at the light, or it has some fitted line-of-sight system to the USCG or some such. You're more in an HF ("shortwave") coverage situation than a UHF one to support the site.
I was an relief assistant keeper for three months at a Canadian west coast light a few years back. Quite the neat situation.
All the best, John
