I asked some on the list to clarify which chips were best and where to get them:
I received this which helped me.
FTDI Chips are the way to go. Valley Enterprises currently seems to be the best source for ready made cables for radios.
I bookmarked Valley Enterprises - they have some nice stuff.

Hi all.....FDTI chips are excellent in Linux the drivers are in the kernel so yo dont have to go looking or fixing them...real plug and play
