I asked some on the list to clarify which chips were best and where to get them:

I received this which helped me.

FTDI Chips are the way to go.  Valley Enterprises currently seems to
be the best source for ready made cables for radios.

I bookmarked Valley Enterprises - they have some nice stuff.
