So I have an Icom T70A handheld I wish to program. I bought a nice FTDI cable to USB and 1/8" stereo plug. Installed the driver and chirp.
Chirp can't read from the radio. All it does is put the radio into scan mode.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I had a similar problem with my Baofeng UV-82. The solution (for me) was to install the drivers that came with my cable -- although I certain that the Miklor drivers recommended on this list will work as well (or better).
Then you need to convince Windows to roll back the drivers (at least on my system it would instantly upgrade the driver as soon as I plugged in the cable). With the proper drivers, and Windows “help” disabled, all should be well.
Did you burn yourself on the live antenna connector? I got a singe, and that was my clue that something was amiss.

Thank you Paul. I am going to contact the eBay guy who sold it to me!
He made a BIG DEAL about jhow his (more expensive) cable was the RIGHT one for my radio since it has the FTDI chip.
I will let you know what happens!

I am surprised different drivers would work. The device does show up OK with the present driver in Device Manager. Just can't figure out why the thing scans all the time. Seems odd to plug in a 1/8" plug but...
Also - I have no idea what you meant about burning your finger on the antenna connector!
I don't touch it for one thing. Why would I?
