I was trying to help a friend work through some problems with Chirp on Win8.1 the other night. (We were actually swapping info back and forth at the bottom of a shared g-doc we were using for logging net check-ins, so not the best medium to convey meanings.)
She indicated she'd used Chirp in the past but that it was broken after the switch. My first thought was that the 2.3.0.0 (counterfit-tolerant) driver wouldn't work under 8.1 but a found a short thread in the Chirp archives that suggested it does work and that shouldn't be an issue.
Also, she said the Baofeng SW that came with the radio/cable does work, so presumably that installed a driver that works with the cheap cables.
I asked her if she'd trying running Chrip *after* getting the Baofeng utility working, but that's where we ran out of time.
I'll pursue it further with her, but thought I'd ask here in the interim for any gotcha's that might crop up with Chirp and Win8.1.

This doesn't have anything to do with Windows 8.1 but I have Chirp on Osx 10.7.5 and I can't get it to open. It acts like it is opening but then jus disappears. I have tried 0.4 and 0.3.1. Same thing happens. Anyone have a clue what to do?
Thanks ahead for the reply.

Thanks. I have 10.7.5 on OSx and am trying to clone a Yaesu FT-60R. I finally saw the instructions to install the python runtime. Did that and it loads now, just can't get the radio to clone to the software though.

I forgot to ask, what is the make and model # of your USB serial cable? This is something we must know before attempting anything.
Just as a heads up, the task is probably going to be finding the right serial driver for you and nothing to do with the CHIRP app.
I do observe that you are three OS X versions behind, which will makes things a bit harder. Is the reason you have not upgraded your OS X is that your Mac hardware does not support OS X beyond Lion?

Yes the hardware will not support Maverick. I have a prolific cable and I finally got it to see the cable and radio but it errors out and tells me it might be a bad cable. I am using the same cable that I use with my vx-1r. May be wrong cable?

Summing this issue up, it is most likely going to be a driver issue. And until we know which serial chip your Prolific cable is using there is not much we can do in the way of selecting your CHIRP serial driver.
Alternately what you can do is try each Prolific drivers identified in the following two headings at CHIRP’s document Mac USB Drivers: Prolific PL-2303 cables - official drivers for the genuine Prolific cables Generic PL-2303 cables (counterfeit and/or “Generic”) Pete

Seriously, please adjust subject lines as the thread drifts.
Before I posted my original question this morning, I scanned the thread subjects going back to the beginning of last year looking for anything related to Win8.1 without finding much of anything pertinent. The next person coming along looking for Mac help will likewise not find this thread if they're just scanning subject lines.
If you want to maintain some continuity, do like I did and keep the original subject with a [was: --] clause.

Just for amusement purposes, I top post, trim when reasonable and change the subject line whenever I feel like it. I use Mail (or any other POP client, never, ever a webmail interface, so those ‘continuity things’ and ‘thread’ (OMG you’ve hijacked the thread!!!) don’t work for me. I can still search on any phrase regardless of subject line.
And just to be ‘on topic’, Chirp won’t save unusual splits properly. I can get to it stay long enough to prgram the radio, but saving and re-loading (from the radio or from a saved file), gives me gibberish and the ’split’ reverts to - or + randomly it seems and the transmit freq are also gone to gibberish.
:)
