[chirp_users] HT Recommendations
A recent addition to our radio club is looking for something to get him on the local repeaters. Woxun and Baofeng come to my mind as good starter radios that don't cost much and work reasonably well. Which HTs would you recommend based on ease of programming, with Chirp of course, reliability, and low cost? Thanks!
Dave, I completely agree with a Baofeng for a starter radio, my my recommendation is that although the 5R is only $25 (give or take)....I would ahead and pay $63 and get the much stronger 8 watt F8HP so that if he wants to stick with the 'starter' radio for a while, he'll at least have a better chance of hitting repeaters.

There's a new one from Baofeng, based on the UV 5R I just got this one: Baofeng BF-F9 V2+ 8-Watt Hi-Power Dual-Band 136-174/400-520 MHz Hand Held Ham Radio Two-Way Transceiver - With Battery, Earpiece, Antenna & Charger (Black) Baofen at the same price as the 8. Glenn

I can vouch for the Baofeng UV-82HP. I also recently got my license and spent a good deal of time checking out HT's. The price plus features and quality made the BF my choice. I also got the programing cable, a battery case for standard AA batteries and a battery eliminator that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I would suggest buying from Baofeng Tech (Amazon) because they will handle any problems here in the USA. It was easy to program with CHIRP on the first try. I haven't tested it for range yet as I live 1.5 miles from a tower with several repeaters (K9PC & N9IAA).

I use the Baofeng 5R with an upgrade antenna and it works fine for me. Bob KF7MWF

And if you want him to be completely happy with his new Baofeng. Have him get a Nagoya NA-771 (SMA female) antenna

Except the UV82X, (1.25M and 2 M version) which transmits illegal harmonics on 70cm, when used on 220. From: Nigel A. Gunn G8IFF/W8IFF nigel@ngunn.net To: Discussion of CHIRP chirp_users@intrepid.danplanet.com Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2016 10:58 PM Subject: Re: [chirp_users] HT Recommendations
Baofeng UV-82 series.
I like my UV-5R, but I also just ordered the BTECH UV-5X3 tribander when it was on sale on Amazon yesterday. I like that it's compatible with all the UV-5R stuff, and it's supposed to have lots of improvements.

I'm envious!! I have the UV-5001 in my truck, but wish I'd held out for the tri-band. Please share comments/opinions down the road after some use.

The UV5X3 is awesome. 100% Chirp supported. Flawless programming. No illegal harmonics reported so far, like the UV5R has had reported.
