Anyone having issues of getting the radio to download from the radio. I have a brand new FTDI program cord and a brand new 8800. I have followed the sequence of getting the radio into clone mode, but I can't get chirp to communicate with the radio.

Any chance it happens to be in crossband mode?
If yes, take it out and try again.

When the instructions tell you to hit the "set" button, it is the fastest press and release you can do. Give that a try. Check with device manager to make sure you are actually on comm port 1.

Did that. Double check com port. Will try fast pressing set and see how it goes with that. Did a com port check software and the cord is showing as good. So I dont know. Will the mars/cap mod have anything to do with it??

How much did your FTDI cable cost? (Any chance it's built with a counterfeit FTDI part?)
FTDI is playing the same sort of games as Prolific, detecting fake parts and declining to work with them. Do NOT downgrade to the driver FTDI circulated that re-writes the USB PID, bricking the part for most people. (There are utilities to re-re-write the PID, but they're beyond the ken of many people.) Does miklor.com have info and driver d/l for FTDI?

If the cable doesn't work, check the pin out. The ground wire was on the wrong pin. In soldered and back to the right pin and working good now. Does have a true ftdi on it.

I built a cloning cable from scratch today - but it didn't work. I had the red wire soldered to the TX pin and the white wire soldered to the RX pin as the Miklor instructions stated. On a hunch, I reversed the RX/TX wires and now it WORKS! The board had the RX and TX markings reversed. BTW my board has LED lights on it so while I am downloading/uploading I get a little light show!

Unfortunately the labeling on the boards is not consistent.
On some boards...
TX means "TX". Connect it to RX on the other end. RX means "RX" Connect it to TX on the other end.

TX means "to TX". Connect it to TX on the other end. RX means "to RX". Connect it to RX on the other end.

you did not have to use your hunch if you read miklor carefuly the 2 posibilities mentioned by jim are talked about there
