I see all of the issues with these radio, I want to get something that will do the job, I want at least 2m and 70cm. But would be even better to have something tri-band.
So with all of what I have seen, which of these radios do you guys recommend.
Chirp does a great job with my Icom, but I would like to get something that I can use and if something happens it is not my Icom handheld. Something that if it falls into the water, or gets whacked I am not out a lot.
So what do you guys recommend?
I use a BF-8HP as it gives me the tri-band..8 Watts vhf and 7 Watts uhf, but also comes with a high gain antenna and a larger batter size than what’s supplied with other Baofeng models.

The BF-F8HP is tri-power and dual-band. The UV-5X3 is dual-power and tri-band.
Jim KC9HI
BF-F8HP or BF-F9V2+ if it's gotta be chirp compatible. I don't think there is a rugged Chirp compatible baofeng yet, but the TYT MD-2017 with third party firmware is probably the cheapest dual band rugged analog capable radio that I can think of. It's not compatible with chirp, and the programming is a little sketchy through the front of the radio, but it appears to be a great deal at 160USD.

I've got the BTECH UV-5X3. Triband, about $70.00, programmable with CHIRP. Small, light, easy to use and inexpensive. I haven't had it long, but it seems to work quite well so far. I have always preffered the UV-82 series over he UV-5 series until now, but I figured that for the price I would give this one a try. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I’m not sure how many other will agree with me, but the TYT-TH 9800 quad band radio seems to work fine for the programming I have done. I know another Ham who has the same radio and he also seems to enjoy this as well.
The radio wasn’t all the expensive either.
Just my 2 cents, good luck.

Well, that was a good load of answers. I think that the radio I am looking at would be the BTECH UV-5X3. I would like to have access to all of those bands.
The TYT-TH 9800 is an interesting option. Have to take a look at that one. I need a radio like that for the wife's car so I can have a radio in that one when I drive it.
A big thanks to all of those who provided me info, and any that may come after.
Again, a big hats off to the folks who do the coding and other work on Chirp.

I have a 5X3 and fortunate enough to have several 220 repeaters within handheld range. Very satisfied with the radio, and it is totally supported by CHIRP.

I ordered it from Amazon last night. Looking forward to getting on some of the 220 machines in my area.
I looked at the comments on the radio, there was good mehh and not so good, but the good was very good so going to take my chance.

I have 2. They have features that Baofengs do not have. There are some glitches, but nothing that is really a deal breaker.
Chirp is the only software available for them, and it supports all functions of the radio. It is very well implemented.

John, Are you sure about that Yahoo group? When I take the link it says no such group exists. If I remove the dash in the name I get same results. I thought they might have moved to groups.io like a lot of yahoo groups have done but I am not having any luck finding it.

If you have the fake Prolific chip in your cable, go to www.miklor.com and look for driver 3.2.0.0. It is easy to roll back the drivers if you need to. Having the FTDI cables is nice, but I have several cables for many different radios that use the same driver. Not as big of a deal as some would lead you to believe.

Is this the Baofeng UV-5R? I apologize if this has already been brought up before, but I always just use the RT Systems (in Colorado) cable and software. I have bought 25 different sets of cable+s/w for my radios and never a hitch once. I learned my lesson the first time I got a Chinese radio with s/w that was not in English, some of the characters in the path for some of the drivers on the disc provided were hard-coded into Chinese, so it took forever to try to get a "good" driver and cable. I am the poorest of hams and I will tell you that I will ALWAYS go to RT Systems for the cable and software. It's just plug 'n play. It's not worth the time I would spend trying to use old, generic or "fake" stuff to make it work. I realize it's possible that I will only use the software once, but I don't care. Programming a radio manually or with non-standard parts just isn't worth my time. Go ahead and spend the fifty bucks and get the RT Systems equipment unless you love headaches or big challenges: https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/baofeng-uv-5r-radio-programming-software-s/2225... .
Good luck!

Go ahead and spend the fifty bucks and get the RT Systems equipment unless you love headaches or big challenges: https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/baofeng-uv-5r-radio-programming-software-s/2225....
Good luck!

If you have the fake Prolific chip in your cable, go to www.miklor.com <http://www.miklor.com> and look for driver 3.2.0.0. It is easy to roll back the drivers if you need to. The cables with authentic FTDI chips have always worked flawlessly for me with CHIRP. I’ve purchased good cables from both Amazon and eBay and used them on a collection of inexpensive HTs & mobiles - Jetstream, Baofeng/Pofung, Btech, Leixen, Zastone (just not the MP-600). I’ve had very poor luck getting any of the cables included with these inexpensive radios to function properly. YMMV

I ordered it online from R&L Electronics, so I'll assume it will be a genuine FTDI chip set.
I'll know tomorrow.

I ran into repeated issues with cables and drivers until I finally just opted for FTDI cables for both mobile and handheld. Problems solved immediately.

The driver on the CD that came with my cable worked just fine. I guess it depends on who you get the cable from.

I've not had any issues with the cable that I get when ordered with the Baofeng. But I have heard others having issues with certain chips from Prolific.

The first URL gave a 404, and I avoid FB like a plague, it is a security violation, and a trojan, but thank you anyhow.
I hit Amazon and got me one, should be here on the 2nd. I will give it a run. Looking forward to getting on some of the 220 machines around here.
I pretty much stay on DMR, but 220 should be a nice tech band, it was in other places where I have been.

I have 2. They have features that Baofengs do not have. There are some glitches, but nothing that is really a deal breaker.
Chirp is the only software available for them, and it supports all functions of the radio. It is very well implemented.

I looked at the comments on the radio, there was good mehh and not so
good,
but the good was very good so going to take my chance.
They all said it was Chirp programmable, that is very good...

Oh good grief, can we please stick to discussing chirp and avoid these ridiculous editorial statements from people who would like to think they are security experts?
