[chirp_users] Trouble loading Chirp on a laptop
Folks, I finally got authorized to send emails here. Well, in my previous email(s), I stated I’m having issues loading Chirp. I’ve tried and tried and, it just won’t load. I followed all the instructions and all I get is the Chirp.exe. file. If I click on that, it (the supposed download) starts all over again.
When I click on the part that’s highlighted, “Windows users will need the latest version”, I don’t get on the next screen what youtube instructors are showing what should appear. They get, at the bottom of the screen, a text bar that runs across the bottom saying: Run, save, and if you click on a down arrow, you’ll see “Run AND Save”.
I don't get that bar. I also don’t get the small text block in the middle of the screen that wants info on “com port”, radio type etc.
Gang, I need help here. Everyone else seems to load Chirp just fine. What am I doing wrong? Scott

Try running the installation in administrator mode.

Hello Scott,
Here is the link to download the latest CHIRP. https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20190206-ins...
Paste that into your browser, and then press ENTER.
Hopefully your browser will ask you what to do with the file chirp-daily-20190206-installer.exe -- the answer is you want to SAVE AS. I put my download files in a folder called "Downloads".
Note: CHIRP runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10. Older versions of Windows are not supported
When it is finished saving, using Windows Explorer (the file explorer) go to Downloads, and find chirp-daily-20190206-installer.exe. Select it with the mouse arrow, then use the right mouse button and click the button and there will be a menu, you want to use "Open As Administrator". Open or Run is the same meaning so if it says "Run As Administrator" that's OK - I just cannot remember which it says. Click Open (or Run) as administrator with the left mouse button.
Follow the prompts and install CHIRP.
Here is the page on problems with Drivers under Windows - if you have the cable sold by your radio maker's company, you won't have a problem but "cheap" cables often are counterfeit. http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
This page will help you find which COM port your cable is hooked up to: https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/FAQ Under Windows you need to use Device Manager. How to is on this page.
Hope this helps.

Hey Dave, I surely appreciate you assisting me in this matter. I followed your instructions and, guess what, Houston, we still have a problem. Yep, it’s still a no-go. I can get that link you provided into the “Downloads” file. But, when I click on that exe. file with the right mouse button, yes, one of the options is, “Run as an Administrator”. But, when I click on that option, it goes right back to the same exact screen that you click on to download the EXE file. The exe. file will load and load and load, but that’s all that’s loaded. There is no Chirp file that I can follow all the prompts. The exe file just keeps cycling. I hate to sound like a phenomenal DUMMY here but, apparently, that’s what I am. Scott

Download a different browser. Download Google Chrome or Firefox. https://www.google.com/chrome/
You download the file in a browser, you should be opening the file in File Explorer. In Windows 10, type "File Explorer" in the search box to find it.
Donwload the Chirp file to Downloads folder. Open the Downloads folder with File Explorer find chirp-daily-20190206-installer.exe and then select it with the mouse, then right click and select Run as Administrator. Follow the prompts.
Watch the screen. You are no longer in the browser, you are in File Explorer, so if you suddenly flip to your browser, something is terribly wrong. You will probably need to reinstall Windows if this happens again.
If you get the prompts, for Run As Administrator, the first thing that will show is a box saying: CHIRP Installation: Installation Folder, leave the default folder as is C:\Program Files (x86)\CHIRP but click on the bottom right "Install" button.
How does this work?
Regards,
David

As far as cables go, I usually use an RT Systems cable. I realize that a lot of people want to circumvent this, but it is a foolproof way of getting from a to b.

Except that the RT Systems cable is mechanically incompatible with (at least one of) the Yaesu water-resistant HTs. The overmolding won't fit down into the socket.

Well Sir, I most certainly appreciate you trying to help me here. I see there is an attached file to your email. Well, if I click on that, I get a blank page, that’s it. So, not sure what you might have been trying to display there. As for the rest of your instructions to load Chirp, same thing. I get to a point where, I click on the highlighted section of “windows installer exe. then, the next screen has the smaller box that asks if I want to install it. I do and, click install. And, as usual, the green graph goes across the top of that text box and when the graph is complete, the only thing I can click on is “close”. When I click close, THAT’S IT. There is no other screens that pop up for further instructions, no direction to anyplace, etc. Chirp is still not loaded. Thanks again, I’ll keep trying. Scott

That's because you just finished installing it. Now you have to start the program.
Hit the Windows key. Type 'chirp' and start the program. [image: image.png]

Yep, I realize that. I’m running Windows 8.1 and I have made some progress. I touched the WINDOWS key on the key pad and typed CHIRP. That brought me to a screen that is blank but, has choices up at the top. One being “RADIO”. I click on that one and it then says, “Download from radio”. I click on that one and, the small screen comes up in the middle of my screen and has three places to fill out.
1. Com port 2. Vendor 3. Model.
I fill out all those and hit download and, an error comes up each time. I don’t know which com port is which on my laptop so, I keep trying to move the radio from one to the other to see if that will help. So far, no luck. But, I’m a lot farther than I was. Thanks for your assistance, I’m still trying. Scott

Scott, be aware that if you are using Windows 10, you'll have to look for Chirp in your programs. It does not load an icon on your desktop.

Scott

I don’t know which com port is which on my laptop
If the device driver is installed properly, then Device Manager should tell you exactly what COM port number was assigned to your programming cable. See this page for an example of what it will look like in Windows 7.
