[chirp_users] How do I ensure that I don't TX on a memory slot? Baofeng UV-5RX3
I thought I saw something about what column to set earlier when I was looking for something else, but can someone give me a hint as to what I need to set in order to disable TX on a particular memory slot that I want to be listen only (specifically, in this case, the US WX frequencies)? — With greatest regards, Geordon Shōshin 正心 VanTassle
In chirp I believe it is the duplex column. Set it to none

None in the Duplex column means Simplex. Off in the Duplex column should mean RX only.

I wasn't aware of that setting, I had used BCL - busy channel lockout previously (my local first responders are still using UHF FM radios).
That Miklor CHIRP guide is very useful - I wasn't previously aware of it.
Thanks,

Interesting hack. Thanks for the idea.
Classically Busy Channel Lock is used if there are multiple users of a frequency. Typically ones one may not hear due to use of CTCSS/DCS to only filter for what you'd like.
This needn't always mean different _users_, it can mean different uses. One example local to me is on one amateur radio repeater. It's both analogue FM voice repeater and also Yaesu Fusion (a digital voice mode.) The analogue FM repeater TX a CTCSS tone that analogue users enable as Tone Squelch to they needn't listen to the brraaaap of the digital voice.
One should look at the rig before transmitting in analogue FM as one may interfere with a conversation/TX in Fusion. That or enable Busy Channel Lockout.
Another example here are two analogue FM amateur radio repeaters on a SNP (Shared Non-Protected) frequency pair. They use different tones (CTCSS) on the input/output. If one only listens to one (doesn't wish to hear the other) then it's good practise to either look at lights/meters, or crack the squelch or Monitor button before transmitting. One may also simply enable Busy Channel Lockout.
Cheers es 73, John
Perfect! Thank you all, especially for the pointer to the milker.com examples page! That’s going to make some good reading. — With greatest regards, Geordon Shōshin 正心 VanTassle
Woa, that's useful!
Is there a pdf version anywhere that I could print out?

Scott,
Just click the image to bring up the full resolution image. Then right-click and choose "Save Image As..." to save the JPG image to your computer. You can then load it into a program such as MS Paint to embellish if needed and print.
Or if you want the whole Miklor "CHIRP Programming Examples" page, choose to print the page from within your browser (the CTRL+P keyboard shortcut should work) and then choose "Save to PDF", "Microsoft Print to PDF" or something similar as the output "Destination".

It seems to be text, not an image.
And yeah you can print the page, but that's always messy and includes ads and stuff on the side.
I may just manually copy it and paste it into a .doc and work with it that way if there's no downloadable vesion.

Yeah, there was never an "original" document created. This was just the result of an email exchange between John and me back in 2012 for which I furnished the original example text and corresponding JPG image. John then formatted it to be consistent with his website.

Sure would be nice eh? Open frequencies tx or rx in any spectrum is always controlled by you, period.

Fortunately, I am old enough and wise enough to know that human beings are not perfect and errors can happen with even the most careful of intents, so I like to err on the side of caution. Fail-safe, as it were.
