[chirp_users] FT-60 help please
I have done quite a bit of reading and trying but it all comes down to Chirp not reading my radio to start. I have it in the Clone mode and I tried pressing PTT to initiate TX also per the manual. I know the cable is good and my COM1 port is available. Does anyone have an FT-60 file I can try uploading to see if it is working there?
BTW this is on Windows 7. I tried it on Debian and that seems to have simlar issues. That is a different machine.
Thanks! Ronny K4RJJ

Ronny,
CHIRP image files for many different radios are available in the the CHIRP repository. The Yaesu FT-60 is one of them.

Attempting an upload when download is not working is a very bad idea. Always get a clean download before attempting an upload. Luckily the Yaesu radios will just display "clone error" in the case of a bad upload, so if you do try this in my experience it doesn't cause any permanent damage.
I've encountered two different types of FT-60 cables and I can't tell the difference. One works flawlessly every time. The other requires a bit of lateral pressure to make electrical contact in the connector. Try this.

Looks like the FT-60 uses the same type of cable that the VX-6 uses. I couldn't get any down loads with my VX-6. I noticed that the plug on the cable going to my radio had some screw threads on it near the covering and when I looked in the radio plug there were some there also. I then actually screwed the radio plug end of the cable into the plug on my radio and everything started working just fine. Made good contact I guess.

Yep but the FT-60 uses the other type without threads. Nothing wrong with my cable as it has worked fine before on these two machines when I had XP on them. This has to be a COM port permissions issue or a problem with the radio or maybe the program install.
The cable I have is one from KAWAMALL of eBay. I have bought 6 cables from them and not a bad one yet.

If I was to set up the com port in advance what would be the ideal setting CHIRP wants to see?

Found strange thing. To make it read I had to HOLD DOWN the PTT. Not just press it. Read fine and I have a good file here. Now the darn thing won't write to the radio. Is there a sequence for that I am missing? It is in --RX-- mode and seems ok except for the Error and not working. Thins radio is very new. Might Yaesu have made firmware changes to Cloning?
Thanks all!

Ronny,
If the cable has one of those unauthorized copies of a Prolific USB-to-serial chip in it, then you are likely using the wrong driver. Windows 7 automatically updates to the latest driver and the latest driver has code to detect the chip and refuses to work with it.
What is needed is an older driver that does not have this code. The version recommended most in this situation is v3.2.0.0. Links for this driver and instructions to install it are available here: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Drivers.html

Thanks for the comment Jim. I am one of those that will hold on to my true serial ports like some people hold guns near and dear. I have no USB programming cables and don't expect I will buy any.

Used a clone cable. (more on that next post) and was able to clone two radios both ways. Still not able to write to the radio from CHIRP.
