[chirp_users] baofeng uv5r
I have 2 of these radios and can't seem to get a good rec signal on them. I get the local sheriff dispatch but do not get the patrol car return. When the bad weather was coming in I tuned to 162.55 which is the weather service for my area. I got a very noisy signal and got in car and drove around to see if it changed. It did come in better in several places but no way acceptable in an emergency. Is their a better antenna available for these? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. DON
Hello Don,
This isn't a list for baofeng uv5r.
Also if you're a first responder, I would not use any of these inexpensive radios because they lack one very important design feature. All these inexpensive radios lack the ability to reject nearby off-frequency signals, meaning that if you are at the scene of an emergency, if someone near by is transmitting, your Baofeng UV5R will become desensitized by the nearby transmission - could be police, fire, or other signal and you might miss vital transmission that might save your life.
Mail lists and FaceBook Groups for the Baofeng UV5R are listed on this page: https://www.baofengsupport.com/forums/
Best wishes,
David N1EA

I purchased/use the Nagoya NA-771 on mine, as I too use my 5R as more of a scanner radio on my desk for my local emergency groups and even local highway crews. It picks up much better, however....I also use this antenna on my BF-8HP which has the extended battery, and the antenna randomly picks up an interference from the battery causing the radio to make a loud, obnoxious noise which can be stopped each time by pressing the PTT. But I do not have that problem on the 5R with the regular battery.

Baofeng's squelch settings are unbelievably high. In Chirp set the #1 squelch level to "1". There are articles on the Web suggesting the subsequent settings. Chris Knowles, N1CAK

Cars broadcast on a different frequency as in a repeater.
