[chirp_users] importing to radio
I have on several occasions tried to program my Baofeng uv5r, and every time I get to the point where I Import info to radio Chirp informs me it is not working
Any suggestions??? Joel KO4QFK
Joel, Have you gone through all the steps as explained on https://www.miklor.com/ https://www.miklor.com/? You didn't explain what steps you took. It might be that you need to install a different driver for the cable you are using. Did you first download "from" the radio first? Dean KC9REN

You don't "import" to a radio. You upload to it. CHIRP will provide a specific error message. CHIRP also puts information about the error in the debug.log file that it creates.
You should provide this exact error message and/or debug.log file. Without this information, it is hard to give specific advice.
The most common error message is cause of problems is "Radio did not respond". The 2 main causes of this are...
1. An incompatible device driver for the programming cable is installed. This mostly happens when using Windows (you didn't say what you are using) and the programming cable was manufactured with a Prolific type USB-to-Serial chip. The driver installed by Windows is incompatible. A workaround for this is to download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php#install
2. The 2-pin plug of the programming cable and the socket of the radio are fully engaged. This can be due to variations in manufacturing of the socket in the radio and/or the length of the pins on the programming cable. Sometimes putting pressure on the plug during the cloning process can help with getting the required connection. Other times there is an interference between the plasting shell of the plug and the case of the radio that prevents the plug from being fully inserted. Sometimes a modification of the plug's shell is needed to make a proper connection.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_ErrorMess.php#error1
Many times both of these conditions exist at the same time. Both have to be addressed before CHIRP can communicate with the radio.
Jim KC9HI
The cable and disc came with the radio. And maybe on your screen it says to upload but I only have two options highlighted Import to Radio or Download from radio. I will continue to play with it and I appreciate all your suggestions but have tried them all. Being a retired engineer I am not about to let a man made object get the best of me. Thanks Joel

The "Upload To Radio" selection is only highlighted when you have a tab selected that was either downloaded from a radio or loaded from a CHIRP Radio Images (*.img) file that was previously saved from a tab that was downloaded from a radio.
You still haven't provided any details like the exact error message, a debug.log file or which operating system you are using.
I will continue to play with it and I appreciate all your suggestions but
have tried them all. Being a retired engineer I am not about to let a man made object get the best of me.
It is generally recommended, unless it is from RT Systems, that you ignore any disc that comes with a programming cable. For everything related to Baofeng UV-5R like radios, you can get everything you need from links on the miklor.com website. No programming software can will until you have the radio properly connected to the computer. Once you solve your cabling issue, I'm sure that CHIRP will work fine.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
The #1 cause of trouble with most generic programming cables that come with a disc is that the programming cable is manufactured with an unauthorized copy of a Prolific USB-to-Serial chip. Assuming you are using Windows, the device driver automatically installed by Windows (but written by Prolific) is intentionally incompatible with these chips.
[image: 3-PL2303HXA PHASED OUT SINCE 2012. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER. Properties.png] [image: 1-Device Manager.png]
To use the programming cable with Windows you must download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver that was available prior the Prolific company deciding to cripple their driver for unauthorized copies of their chips.
[image: 2021-01-28 08_20_06-Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3) Properties.png]
The other common problem with these radios is an incomplete connection between the 2-pin plug and the socket of the radio. Some are successful at just pressing on the plug during the download/upload process. Others have had to modify the cable to remove material that was interfering with the plug from being fully inserted into the radio.

There is no error message, the system works fine up to a certain point and then it just stops, after a few minutes it says Chirp is not responding. this has happened several times between yesterday and today, have a Dr's apt tomorrow and some "honey do's" to do , and I think I will take a break and start over again Wed or Thur

I don’t know why I’m receiving all these replies that are not applicable to the query I first sent out. Please someone reply with programming experience with the PuXing brand of Chinese radios.
I have a PuXing PX-888 radio, a Chirp supported cable, and a Windows 10 computer. The cable is a Baofeng programming cable with a WCH chipset. I have verified that the driver for this cable is the correct driver according to https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php#cable . The driver is CH340/341.
I have no trouble programming my Baofeng radio, the cable works perfect with this radio. I know how to use Chirp, I have programmed countless other radios. I know that you download the radio image file *.img first.
The radio I’m having trouble programming is a PuXing PX-888. When I upload to the radio, or download from the radio, the data gets garbled. Data does send both directions, but it’s all mixed up. This cable does not do this with the Baofeng, it uploads and downloads perfectly fine.
I have also verified that the cable is plugging all the way into the PuXing radio, according to https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_ErrorMess.php#error1 . I am not getting these errors. As I said, data is flowing both directions, but it’s all garbled. For example, if I download from radio, the channel locations, frequencies, tones, and offset columns get all mixed up. If I try to upload to radio, same thing happens, the channel locations, frequencies, tones, and offsets get entered incorrectly
The exact model of my radio is not listed in Chirp, it lists a PX-777, and a PX888K, but not a plain PX-888. When I click on DOWNLOAD FROM RADIO, in the model selection it does not list PX-888 specifically, it only lists PX-777, and PX-888K. I am using the PX-777 selection, as the PX-888K selection does not work at all, it gives an actual error message.
Could this be the problem, Chirp does not support my EXACT radio?

I also have a Puxing PX-888K and love it. But, I ended up using a software package supplied by Puxing called PX888 UV. This works fine. I have not been successful with Chirp for this radio. If you can't find it, I can send you a copy.

Are you using CHIRP? There is "Import to Radio" selection.
> I will continue to play with it and I appreciate all your suggestions but have tried them all. Being a retired engineer I am not about to let a man made object get the best of me.
To use the programming cable with Windows you must download, install and select the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver that was available prior the Prolific company deciding to cripple their driver for unauthorized copies of their chips.
The other common problem with these radios is an incomplete connection between the 2-pin plug and the socket of the radio. Some are successful at just pressing on the plug during the download/upload process. Others have had to modify the cable to remove material that was interfering with the plug from being fully inserted into the radio.

I believe this to be the case, and said as much in my previous response, which included a link to a CHIRP support discussion that was updated as recently as a month ago, discussing how CHIRP doesn't support that exact model. I can't find the link again (it should be in the thread) but I found this similar thread as well:

From the supported radio list:
Puxing PX-2R (UHF) PX-777 PX-888K
Only those models. Not the PX-888. Nor any other number similar to "888" like the PX-888D which also exists.

Larry, I am interested in trying free software you are using.
RT software does seem like good software, I may end up going that route.

There is also a newer version called Two Way Radio that works with all of my Puxing models. My version is 1.0.1. Check out this page to see if this helps: https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/Downloads_ep_40.html I also found this: https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/RPS-888-Programming-Software-Only-for-the-Puxin... See if any of these helps. Otherwise you are welcome to try a copy of the free software that I am using.

Are you using CHIRP? There is "Import to Radio" selection.
> I will continue to play with it and I appreciate all your suggestions but have tried them all. Being a retired engineer I am not about to let a man made object get the best of me.

The first link provided, it says my PX-888 radio is in the list of compatible radios in the table on page one. On the second page, the screenshot shows PX-888A programming software. This software does not work with my radio. See my next point.
The second link provided, I downloaded the PX-888.rar file from the Google Drivers & Files search, extracted the files and installed the software. It installs PX-888A software, which when I connect cable to radio and then try to read, it gives “Radio does not match” warning. The notice about the exe file in the patch folder, does not install, it gives a DLL warning, it looks like it wont run on Windows 10.
I appreciate you trying to help me. I’m simply giving feedback to the suggestions offered to me.

Thanks David. I will contact the seller you found and inquire. Unfortunately, the PX-888D and PX-888K software will not work with my PX-888 radio. And yes, I did find out that RT systems does make software for the PX-888, it seems to be nice software, but I would have to pay for it. I may end up going that route.
Regarding the pic you attached, I did not update my driver to the Prolific 3.2.0.0, as my cable has the WCH chipset (CH340/341), according to https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php#install , I am not supposed to download and update, as the Prolific driver is not compatible with the WCH chipset. From what I read anyway. Correct me if I am wrong.
