[chirp_users] Programming Yaesu Radios using CHIRP
Has anyone had a problem programming a Yaesu radio with CHIRP? Someone mentioned that their Yaesu was damaged and had to be sent to the factory because CHIRP had overwritten some code controlling the processor. It also had to be re-flashed. Since I don't fully understand how CHIRP works this doesn't make sense to me, but knowing manufacturing companies, they may share Channel Memory with processor memory and not think much about it. Thanks for your information.
There are a lot of Yaesu radios, and not all of them use the same programming protocol. I'm only really familiar with the newer Yaesu HTs, namely the FT-4 and FT-65. The protocol for these radios controls the memory access fairly tightly, so accidentally writing into the wrong place is unlikely. You can access memory you are not supposed to by writing special software, but the CHIRP driver does not do this. Older Yaesu radios use a much cruder protocol and it is theoretically possible to mess up and hit the wrong memory, but I don't personally have knowledge of this, we will need to see who else responds.

As a newbe with a new Yaesu FT-70D, on 3/16/2019 I used CHIRP to easily import into it the 43 repeaters within 20 miles of me, per RepeaterBook.com. I first installed a virtual com port to my Win10 laptop using: https://www.silabs.com/products/development-tools/software/usb-to-uart-bridg... I first manually programmed two repeaters into my FT-70D so I'd have some data to view. Then I ran the CHIRP program, following its on-screen instructions to connect my HT. Using the CHIRP program, I then imported my area's repeaters. Then I exported the data so I could use Excel to re-arrange the rows. Having the data in Excel allowed me to print a list on paper, that I now refer to. Then I imported the data back to my FT-70D without problems.
FWIW, on the "Official Yaesu USA" Facebook group site, the Yaesu nat'l sales mgr, John Kruk, on 3/12/2019, responded to a comment, "Is there a problem using chirp?" by writing "Yes CHIRP has damaged radios". Perhaps someone had tried using CHIRP with an unlisted radio or had failed to follow the CHIRP instructions. I discovered Mr. Kruk's comment after I had successfully used CHIRP.
Thank you for the volunteers who developed and maintain CHIRP!
Doug K7KDG PS. I'm re-sending this msg as "plain text" 'cause my first effort using html was "scrubbed" by Mailman.
Doug, I wonder how the Yaesu manager would respond if asked "has any customer ever 'damaged' a radio while using Yaesu-supplied software?"

I have a Yaesu FT2600M can I program this rig with Chirp? I am totally blind, and programming the rig by hand just isn't getting the job done. Thanks for any help.

Angelo,
Yaesu FT2600M is NOT supported by CHIRP.
You can fill out a request for it to be supported.
Does CHIRP even work with a screen reader?

About a screen reader for CHIRP: apparently this question comes up so frequently that it's in the FAQ: https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/FAQ Answer: Yes if you use Linux, no for Windows and Mac because they do not properly support the UI library CHIRP uses. What the FAQ does not mention is that CHIRP will run quite comfortably on a very inexpensive Linux system such as a Raspberry Pi ($35.00 or less) or even on a Raspberry Pi zero ($15.00 or less), which can also run a screen reader. I have successfully used CHIRP on a Raspberry Pi Zero W to program a Baofang HT. I did this because I was in a hurry and did not have a programming cable and I knew that the Baofang uses a 3.3V UART. The Pi has a 3.3v UART, so I just connected it directly to the Baofang with one 2.5mm and one 3.5 mm phono plug, but you could use the regular programming cable if you already have it. Add a speaker for audio output from the screen reader and run it headless from your main computer, so no separate keyboard is needed. Since I'm not blind I ran VNC to see the virtual screen on my main computer.

Never had any problems with programming Yaesu radios and have programmed several dozens of them. However, today I did experience something odd. I was using a portable and hooked up a ICOM 91E and a Powerwerx mobile with the intent of copying the info from the ICOM to the mobile. The radios were on different COM ports and the ICOM differs from the mobile in that it is dynamically programmed. While downloading from the ICOM the Powerwerx kept beeping intermittently as though it was receiving information from the computer. I have no idea why or how but I eventually unplugged the mobile. The download of the ICOM did not work correctly. I was using the latest daily software for Windows. Alan – W6ARH

ALWAYS download from the radio first, then modify the programming. That way you shouldn’t overwrite vital parameters. As far as copying to another radio, read the destination radio, open the new file in a separate window, then copy and paste to the destination radio.
