[chirp_users] BaoFeng UV-82C and CHIRP power question
I have a UV-82C and I can only select either 1Watt or 5Watt output using CHIRP or the factory programming software. Is there some way using CHIRP (or other means) to select 2Watts for MURS or 500mW for FRS frequencies 8 through 14? I'm pretty sure the answer will be "no" because I know the power output selection is embedded in the firmware in the radio. Is there an antenna that will reduce the power output without damaging the radio?
Thank you for any information on this subject,Dan
Correct. Only the factory has the necessary software to adjust the power levels. There is also a power adjust pot inside the radio but it probably won't adjust the levels that far.

You could use a pad or attenuator between the radio and antenna but that would be too bulky and it would also reduce the receive sensitivity.
It would still not be legal to use on FRS or MURS regardless of how you set the power levels because the radio is not Part 95 certified and cannot be because of more reasons than just the power output.

Dan murs ,gmrs,, and FRS, have pretty much became cb channels of the FM world. I really don't think anyone is checking the power output levels on these we use them all the time for hunting mostly murs. Pretty good idea ,no interference no one cares. It shows the power and frequency adjust pots and a screen shot of the factory power adjustment software.
So far this software hasn't been leaked to the world as far as I know.

You could try one of those Russian hacking sites. They have a way of finding things.

There is no way in the world that these radios are legal on MURS, GMRS, FRS, or CB. the homepage for this users group clearly states that. Please do not encourage people to operate illegally on this forum.
Thank you.

Illegal for use on MURS or FRS. I doubt the developers of Chirp want to be complicit in promoting criminal activity.

Irrelevant post. It's already been established that the power limits are set in the radio not the programming software. Besides... if they didn't want to be "complicit in promoting criminal activity" the software wouldn't let you program those frequencies.

That's ridiculous! Remember that there is a rest of the world outside your national borders. There's people who have different bandplans and legal needs.
Thanks for all the info everyone, I've learned a lot since I asked those questions. I apologize if things got stirred up a little bit, that was not my intention. I'm new at this, and after purchasing a few cheap Chinese radios from Amazon I have since learned they are not legal to use in the states. I went to the FCC website and read the same things all of you have told me.
Thank you for telling me what I should have known before I bought those radios. My next radio won't be a cheap Chinese radio :-)
Thank you all very much,Dan Jolley

Please note that the radios are only illegal for use in the ways you mentioned. If you get a ham radio license, the radios are perfectly legal to use on the ham radio frequencies. :)

The cheap radios ARE legal in the US on ham, business, or Public Safety (FCC Part 97 or 90) with the proper Part 90 sticker and individual ham ticket or business/public safety license AND Licensee permission.

The are NOT legal on frs or murs because they have remove able antennas and too much power. Just quiz Baeofeng they will back me up.
