[chirp_users] Chirp under Linux
Thank you for reading this.
I bought a Baofeng UV-82HP about four months ago and I cannot get Chirp to read from the radio, or in fact to do anything with the radio.
I'm running Chirp under Kubuntu and have tried every Chip daily version over the past four months. This is the error message that I receive when I attempt to read from the radio:
"Radio did not respond"
These are the entered parameters:
/dev/ttyUSB0 Baofeng UV-82HP
I have read and write access to the serial port which is the same port that I use for several application including programming an Arduino board. I have tried several different Baofeng models, just in case, with the same result.
I've trimmed the plastic from the plug so that it slips into the radio's sockets more easily. I've attempted to read from the radio in both channel and frequency modes. Finally, I've searched the Internet for even the slightest clue but to no avail.
I do not know anyone who owns a Baofeng radio or who uses Chirp. So this mailing list is my last hope.
Any clues at all will greatly appreciated.
Phil, Seeing how you have not gotten this to work on any Baofengs, I would start considering the cable, like the chip is bad or it has a short in it. Can you check the cable? Or, borrow one from someone to eliminate that possibility, or perhaps spend a few bucks and buy another? HTH. Try this. Before you try to read from the radio, do "chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0". I have a Baofeng UV82HP and CHIRP reads and writes just fine once I have done this.

Is the radio turned ON? Sometimes you have to not only turn them on but also crank the volume to max.

This is a cable problem. You would get the same error if you didn't plug the cable into your radio at all.
Make sure the 2-pin plug is fully inserted into the socket of the radio. When I first got my UV-82, I plugged in my cable and thought it was all the way in. It wasn't. What happens is the metal sleeves in the socket can cause the pins to stick and you will swear the plug is fully in solid. Wiggle it some while pressing and you will be surprised when it goes in further (I know I was).

I use Fedora on a desktop and Linux Mint on a laptop and UV 5R radios.
I have had troubles in the past with cheap, prolific based cables either needing trimming, or failing to work reliably. Life is short. I finally spent some money and bought a quality FTDI based cable - I purchased a BTech PC03 on Amazon and it just works every time on both computers. I think it was $21 US. The cable snaps right in the radio jacks, there are indicator lights on the USB plug end and the cable is nice and flexible. Must be real stranded copper wire.

I think this must be the problem. I bought a second cable from a different supplier, but it is identical to the first and it doesn't work either. I'll see if I can find a supplier for the suggested BTech PC03 cable.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

No. This would not be the issue for a programming cable used with a Ubuntu based operating system. Only Windows and macOS operating systems have difficulties with unauthorized Prolific devices.

Did you plug the programming plug into the radio, turn the volume all the way down and turn the radio on? Also, is the programming cable non- OEM?

I don't know, both cables are labled "Baofeng".
Cables using the Prolific chipset have always been a problem. I always buy a cable with the FTDI chipset. I did recently program a radio with a Prolific chipset cable, so maybe those drivers have been added to the kernel now, too. There have been fake Prolific chipsets out in the wild that are unreliable, so there's that problem, too. As far as I know FTDI always works.

All you have to do to get fake Prolific cables to work is to roll the driver back to 3.2.0.0. Driver can be found at www.miklor.com. Real easy to solve that ‘major’ problem.

It shouldn't matter. I've programmed lot of different radio models from several different radio vendors and routinely only turn the volume knob just far enough to power on the radio being cloned. In over 7 years of doing it like this, I have never had a data transfer issue that was determined to be related to the position of the volume knob.
That being said, I have had exchanges with a few owners of Chinese designed radios that have claimed that they can, on demand, reproduce a data transfer failure by turning the volume knob to it lowest volume position and restore to successful data transfers by turning the volume up to its highest volume position. It doesn't make sense that it would be a change in "volume" that would affect the data transfer. Rather there must be something in the design of the radio or something in the user's environment that allows some kind of "interference" to be introduced into the digital signal during the data transfer and that interference can somehow be reduced or made worse by the position of the volume knob.
Since the position of the volume knob should not make a difference to the cloning process, then it shouldn't matter what the position of the knob is. If someone feels that they have more success with the volume turned all the way up, so be it. I will continue to keep mine set to minimum.

The cable connectors must not be making proper contact. I've read suggestions that the cable needs to be pressed in firmly. If I press any harder then I'll surly break something.
What a pain!
Phil,
Someone gave you this command, but they forgot to start it with "sudo" and if you didn't use sudo the command will not work.
sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0
Check the ownership of this:
ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
This will list the owners of /dev/ttyUSB0.
See if you're in the group that is listed.
Enter this command:
groups
It will return the groups your a member of. You have to belong to the group that is listed when you gave the command: ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
If you disconnect the USB cable then reconnect it. You can confirm the device name by this command:
sudo dmesg | tail
You should see lines that says "new device" and it will give the address of the new device, that's the device CHIRP needs to use in order to work .
Try that, 73

The cable connectors must not be making proper contact. I've read suggestions that the cable needs to be pressed in firmly. If I press any harder then I'll surly break something.
What a pain!
Regards, Phil

Phil,
Someone gave you this command, but they forgot to start it with "sudo" and if you didn't use sudo the command will not work.
Thanks for you reply David, I had already tried all of that. I'm confident that the problem is at the radio end. What I really need is to find someone with the same radio but I don't think that's at all likely.
Where are you?

That's my experience. It just works, every time. At least with any flavour of Ubuntu that I've tried.

My experience matches Nigel's. I've used it on all of the major Linux distributions, a few of the lesser ones, and my own Linux system I built from source. If Chirp doesn't work on Linux, then replace your cable, since it is the likely problem.

I don’t see where an error was posted. You’ll need to make sure you have the correct com port, and that you elevate your permissions appropriately using sudo or change permissions to the com port.

For me under Ubuntu it just works: make sure you are in the dialout group, and when you try to upload or download to the radio, you probably need to select /dev/ttyUSB0 (you can check this by unplugging your cable, then plugging it back in, and running dmesg to see what device got assigned).

The Windows equivalent of sudo is "run as administrator" which you Windows users often seem to need. At least with Linux, I can initiate an update and ALL the software I have installed gets updated. No going around multiple websites looking for updates. And it only takes 5 minutes at most for big system updates without numerous reboots during the process.

For me, and for everybody I know, in Linux it "just simply works." When for everybody else, it works, perhaps rather than blaming the program or the OS, maybe you should start thinking, "What am **_I_** doing wrong?"

For me running Ubuntu (16.04) on a Chromebook under Crouton (which is not a garden variety setup for sure), and using a cable with a counterfeit chip, it still "just works." However, even though I am a member of the Dialout group, I still need to do the "sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0" each time. It is not a huge problem to do this, since I only program my Baofengs (UV-5R and UV-82HP) when I go from Washington to Arizona and vice-versa. It is most likely not CHIRP, not the cable, and not the Baofeng that is your problem.

Does anyone know if it would be bad to add the Chirp repository to the ARM Ubuntu Mate running on my Pine64 and then proceed to install it? Glenn

Phil,
I believe that we have the same cable and are also using a similar version of Linux if I remember from your past posts.
On my system, when the cable is in the usb port, doing a ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 shows: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Dec 23 10:24 /dev/ttyUSB0. Which shows 660 permissions so chmod to 777 is not needed if you are in the dialout group.
The lights on the cable, both red and green, blink constantly when reading or sending to the radio. Since you seem to have tried several cables, have you tried different usb ports on the same computer or tried different computers.
Were both of your radios purchased at the same time - maybe they have the problem.
You mentioned you were in Austrailia. There is an ham, VK3JD, who lives in the Melbourne area, and is sometimes on the IRLP 9070 (Alaska) reflector - don't know what he uses in his area. I he has said he uses Chirp. If you are in that area or have access to an IRLP node, you may be able to contact or even get together with him.

Thanks for your reply Fred,
I use similar cables to programme Arduino boards and to read GPS data into my laptop without any problems. The laptop has three ports and I've tried them all and I only have one computer. I do have a Raspberry Pi, I wonder if that's worth a try?

I only have one Baofeng radio, a UV-82HP. I have, in desperation, selected different Baofeng model but of course with the same result. As I said, I'm confident that the problem is at the radio end. I have tried three different cables.
You mentioned you were in Austrailia.
We are full-time travellers and I've only come across one active repeater during the four months since I purchased the radio. I've made one contact and the operator hadn't heard of Baofeng or Chirp.

Phil,
I have a RPi but have never tried putting Chirp on it. Just installed it this afternoon and it runs just fine on my RPi3+.
The web site https://skars.co.uk/installing-chirp-on-the-raspberry-pi/ has a script that works just fine. (I didn't run the whole script, just copy & pasted what I needed). Change the date to the latest which is 20191221. On my Fedora desktop, I just use the wget command when ever I want to upgrade Chirp. Never have used the setup.py install script before but did on the Pi.
I seem to remember some talk sometime ago about the python-serial program not being install automagically when installing the python packages on some systems. You might check that on your computer.

I was going to play with the Raspberry Pi Yesterday but it's in the bottom box and it's just too much trouble, plus I must admit that I'm fed up with the Baofeng radio.

That's not the problem here Fred. I have both python serial libraries (Chirp is built on Python 2) installed. As I say, USB serial communication works correctly with everything else, just not this radio.
I hate typing sudo first. I always do sudo su or sudo -s first so I can type whatever I want without the worry of leaving out sudo. Glenn ----- Original Message ----- From: D.J.J. Ring, Jr. To: Discussion of CHIRP Sent: Monday, December 23, 2019 12:47 AM Subject: Re: [chirp_users] Chirp under Linux
Phil,
Someone gave you this command, but they forgot to start it with "sudo" and if you didn't use sudo the command will not work.
sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0

Although they look similar, a standard Baofeng cable and DM5R cable are Not the same. The DM5R cable is straight through with no internal chip.

You've specified the wrong com port? My CPS doesn't ask for a com port. It just seems to find the radio. However, it does get confused if I have 2 radios connected (to different USB ports).
