[chirp_users] Can't upload to FT-60R
Hello Everyone!
I have an issue with CHIRP not being able to upload to my FT-60R. It will download just fine but I get an error when I try to upload to the radio. I also have the FT-60 Commander software that works fine but I had to change it to the "Alternate Upload Method" Any thoughts or suggestions?
Be sure to hold down the “Send” button on your computer for at least a full second. See the Cloning instructions in the manual - your computer is the “source" “radio” while uploading to your ft-60R.

Are you talking about a "Send" button in the CHIRP application on my computer?
Exactly. It is the last step before transfer of data should begin. I had the same problem then happened to notice in the FT-60R manual that when cloning you need to hold down the PTT switch on the sending radio for a full second. I tried that with CHIRP upload and it finally worked! I complained to the CHIRP people that the instruction dialog in the software did not say “a full second” and they fixed it in later versions. Your version should be telling you to hold it for at least a full second.
Hope this helps.

Actually it's the wrong direction. I can send from the FT-60 to CHIRP with no problems. It's sending the modified data back to the FT-60 that's giving me the issues.
Don’t let the nomenclature mess with your brain. The CHIRP software together with the programming cable makes your radio think you are cloning another radio (the source radio) to the one you want to program (the target radio). The clone instructions in the User Manual are correct (for the target radio) whether you are actually cloning one radio to another or uploading from CHIRP to your handheld.
Yes, I understand that you can copy from the radio to CHIRP just fine. There is some confusion going on here. I am talking about moving the programming you have done on your computer in the CHIRP software to your handheld FT-60R. When you do that you chose “Upload to Radio” in the “Radio” menu of the CHIRP software. You will see a dialog box with choices to make regarding the Port, Vendor and radio Model. When you make those selections and click OK, you get another dialog box titled “Yaesu FT-60 Instructions”. (You will notice that these instructions are the same as those in the User Manual for the target radio, except for the full-second thing). When you have followed the instructions on your CHIRP screen you need to click on the OK button and keep it down a full second because that is mimicking the PTT switch on a source radio. Otherwise you are not following the clone instructions in the manual.
BTW, I complained to CHIRP about the defective dialog that doesn’t say to hold down the OK button a full second and they immediately fixed that but I see that today, it is gone again.
Hope this helps.

Jackson, I'm glad you've managed to get CHIRP to work for your radio. However, I'm not sure how holding the OK button for a second resolves anything for uploading to the radio. It's not programmed that way. The download from radio instructions still include holding the PTT for 1 second.
John, would you be able to tell us what the error message says? What operating system are you using and what version of CHIRP?

Hello Chris!
I'm running Windows 7 Home Edition.
I hope this mailing list allows file attachment so I can show pictures of what I'm seeing. If not, I'll re-post with links to GDrive instead.
Pic 1 shows the output from a little support program that shows what version of the cable chipset I'm using.
Pic 2 shows the error I get when I try to send from the computer to the FT-60 when following the on-screen instructions including holding down the "OK" button for a full second as recommended by W7VMK.
Pic 3 is a window from FT-60 Commander that shows that I've enabled the "Alternate Write Mode" because if I don't check it I can't send to the FT-60.
Pic 4 shows the revised method of setting the FT-60 to receive data from the computer. Please note that this alternate set of instructions was provided by FT-60 Commander and this method WORKS.
Maybe this alternate method can be included into CHIRP someday.
I'm convinced it the particular cable I'm using but it's only a guess.
LOL, Yes, I guess the joke’s on me then. Meanwhile I have just yesterday re-programmed my FT-60R’s using CHIRP. It works great. Oh - and I noticed that I didn’t need to hold down the OK button a full second so was scratching my head over that.
Your difficulty has to be something else then. Sorry.
Good Luck.

Thanks for trying Jackson!
I wish FT-60 Commander supported files from Repeaterbook. If that were the case I'd be good to go!
Your cable seems to be a Prolific clone. Check out the following website with loads of information on that. You basically need to revert to an older version of the driver.
http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
Did I understand the alternate instructions (starting TX, then RX after it errors) worked for you using CHIRP?

Umm. Not quite :) The alternate instructions work when I use FT-60 Commander. I haven't been able to get CHIRP to work. I'll try the older driver and see what happens.

It works! Yay!! Here are the steps I followed:
1. I have the CD that came with the cable. So that's a plus! 2. I disconnected from the Internet completely so it wouldn't go looking for the Windows update version of the driver. 3. I un-installed the driver from the PC so it would liik for the driver again. 4. Plugged in the cable and told it I had the CD. 5. Voila!! CHIRP now works!!
Awesome! I haven't used other software, but I really enjoy CHIRP and use it for all my radios.
Be cautious using CDs that come with inexpensive, cloned-chip cables. I've seen many that contain viruses. I'd run an antivirus scan to be sure. The http://www.miklor.com/ website is probably a safer bet.

WEll actually the software on the CD is older than the miklor software (or has a different versioning system). :) and my system scans all apps before they will actually open so it looks like I'm good here :) I'm now a proud CHIRP user!

I got that error. When I installed a different serial-USB driver, I got farther in the process.
i have a 898s, i gave up with chirp on that and used VV898S_USER_V107 app. chirp dont seem to like the 2 memory banks and reads wrong orders and other pickles.
chirp happy with all my other radios. that 898s i have shoved in a corner now anyway, its not very good buggy. i got the QYT KT-8900D now and that is MUCH better, and chirps great.
