When I attempt to download from radio, I get this is an experimental driver do you wish to proceed ? I have confirmed that the radio is on the list supported by CHIRP, my phone is authentic as is my cable.
I am new to ham radio and not sure if I should proceed.
You cannot hurt the radio by attempting to download. If it succeeds, you are on your way. The worst that can happen is that CHIRP will report an error message.

This is a common notice put on new drivers. Unfortunately, as is the case here, it is often not removed once the driver is proven. The UV-5X3 has been supported for 4 years and the driver is fine. Just be sure to tick the box to suppress the notice in the future.

Hello,
I am sorry to bother everyone again but I am uncertain how to proceed. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my cable, Windows 10 is recognizing it. But now I get an "error reading data. Not the amount of data we want." I have looked for trouble shooting but all I can find is the updating the driver or an issue with the cable which isn't my issue. I have tried multiple times. I have made sure the cable clicks in, I have tried pulling the cable out a little, but I get the same error.

Are you choosing the correct COM port? Which Vendor and Model are you choosing? Attach the debug.log file.

I apologize, I tried a different USB port and it worked. I was using the ones on top of my computer instead of the ones in the back for convenience. Thank you for your help. Have a great evening.

Glad you got it working by plugging into a port at the back but I wonder whether this is one of those weird USB3 port compatibility issues? Is the port at the side blue, vs black at the back?

The front top has 4 usb ports, 2 that are 3.0 and 2 that are 2.0. I am not 100% certain of the 6 on the back but I believe they are 3.0.
I have had this happen before. I have a Yeti Blue microphone and it doesn't want to work with any port in the top front. But works great in the back.
Thanks for the help everyone. It was simple enough to program once I got the ports right.

Hello and hope it is OK to join this discussion, which I just signed up for this week. Like Dawn, I am new to HAM radio (as of Xmas) and trying to set up a mobile unit. Main problem is setting up IMG via PC and Chirp software, using a Mirkit FDTI cable. Instructions seem pretty clear, but I can’t get cloning to work. Here are background details:
1. PC’s are new Dell desktop and MS Surface laptop, both using Windows 10 2. Tried all ports (2.0 & 3.0) on both PC’s and get error message “Radio not responding” when trying to clone (download) 3. W10 Device Manager shows an “FT232R USB UART” device under “Other Devices”, not under COM ports 4. Due to #3, I cannot select any COM port that corresponds to the cable (assuming the FT232R USB UART is the cable), in Chirp software 5. Possibility of bad cable based on same outcome with different PC’s?? 6. Any way to force cable installation under COM ports, instead of Other Devices??
If I could get the cable connection to work with Chirp software, I think the rest of the setup for channels/frequencies is pretty straightforward, although I may need some help with the “operational” settings. I am looking forward to getting the appropriate HAM license/certification to use this radio and appreciate any help/guidance you can provide.

Hi Rich,
You're going to need to get the appropriate drivers for the serial adaptor installed. Until you get that in place you're not going to get anywhere I'm afraid.
Can you provide any extra details from the USB to serial adaptor that might help us to help you?
Welcome to the hobby, out of interest where in the world are you (I'm in south England)?

I had to download the proper drivers. Here is a link to a list of drivers.
https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_drivers.php
These drivers will allow your USB port to be a "com" port.

Rich,
Welcome to the discussion!
Firstly, which radio are you trying to program?
Secondly, does the "FT232R USB UART" device under "Other Devices" have a yellow exclamation mark next to it? If so, then the driver may not be installed or the cable is malfunctioning in some way. However, the Mirkit cable is advertised as having a genuine FTDI chip inside and assuming that the cable is genuine, the likelihood of that possibility is significantly reduced. Windows normally detects and installs FTDI drivers automatically through Windows Update. At this point I would say to check that Windows Update is enabled and working, but since you have already tried the cable on different PCs with the same result, that would tend to rule out a PC specific problem. There are two types of drivers for FTDI chips - D2XX and VCP. The former installs as a USB device only, the latter as a Virtual COM Port. I am not familiar with Mirkit cables, but if you have no yellow exclamation mark and since the cable has apparently been recognized as an FT232R device, then I am wondering whether the automatic install might have installed the D2XX drivers for some reason. You could try installing the VCP drivers which are available directly on the FTDI Chip website:
https://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
If that still doesn't work, then the cable or may indeed be faulty.

First, thanks to everyone for quick and helpful feedback.
You were all correct in the missing driver being the problem, although I never had the yellow exclamation mark. Dawn’s link helped to load the appropriate driver, which immediately created a COM3 port option in Chirp. That also allowed me to clone and download the original IMG file into Chirp, which I have saved. I now can see the format to use to populate the frequency fields, which has generated a couple of new questions:
1. What frequencies should I load into memory slots? 2. If I don’t load a frequency into a memory slot, does that mean I can’t RX/TX on that frequency? 3. How do I know what frequencies to use for repeaters in my area (or outside of my area)? 4. How do you assign a NAME to a channel in Chirp? 5. Can you recommend a good source for learning the process to license/certification?
Once again, appreciate the help/guidance!

Rich,
Welcome to the discussion!

Rich,
Inside CHIRP you can access under the Menu, the RADIO menu, and under it, "Query Data Sources" and then "Repeater Book."
If you are in Europe - I believe you might have said your in the UK, you can use the Data Source prezmieniki.net which lists many EU countries including UK.
rfinder which offered world-wide service (not just USA / Canada and Europe) either is having web server problems or has shut down. http://rfinder.net is their web site, and there is a link inside CHIRP but you have to have a username (email) and password first.
Mine doesn't work at the moment, so I suspect that website is gone.
You can download these, and you can copy from the download and paste to your downloaded channel grid that you obtained by downloading from your radio.
REMEMBER - download from your radio and SAVE the file as an img file so you can restore the factory settings if something goes horribly wrong. If you have google drive or dropbox, upload it to that archive, the file is THAT important.

*AMEN to that ----------------------------------^*
I got the tee shirt with the bullet holes and it ain't funny, lucked out and found another file that worked but it was pure luck.
I have loaded many frequencies from the Chirp stock configuration list, which was actually pretty easy, once you understand the steps. However, this has now led to a few new questions:
1. In the FRS/GMRS category, it loaded what appears to be identical frequencies for 20 channels in each of these groups (Channel 1-20 for each group is the same). Is there a reason for this redundancy or can I delete one range? 2. I loaded all of the NOAA weather channels, but do not seem to get any reception on any of them, although I know they broadcast non-stop. Is there something else I need to do in the setup? Problem exists whether I scan (and do not skip channel) or input the frequency directly. 3. Is there a way to jump directly to a specific channel in memory, instead of having to step through one at a time using the arrow keys? 4. Is there a way to link the frequency AND the corresponding channel name in the display, either on the A/B display lines (frequency on one and name on the other) or by toggling between frequency and channel mode to see both pieces of data on the same line (A or B)? 5. Once I load all the desired frequencies from the Chirp stock configuration lists into memory, do I need to modify any of the individual column settings that were loaded into each frequency line?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
Welcome to the discussion!

Glad you got it working by plugging into a port at the back but I wonder whether this is one of those weird USB3 port compatibility issues? Is the port at the side blue, vs black at the back?

I am sorry to bother everyone again but I am uncertain how to proceed. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my cable, Windows 10 is recognizing it. But now I get an "error reading data. Not the amount of data we want." I have looked for trouble shooting but all I can find is the updating the driver or an issue with the cable which isn't my issue. I have tried multiple times. I have made sure the cable clicks in, I have tried pulling the cable out a little, but I get the same error.
Are you choosing the correct COM port? Which Vendor and Model are you choosing? Attach the debug.log file.

In the FRS/GMRS category, it loaded what appears to be identical frequencies for 20 channels in each of these groups (Channel 1-20 for each group is the same). Is there a reason for this redundancy or can I delete one range?
FRS requires all channels to be NFM. GMRS includes the available repeaters. Otherwise the frequencies, since the recent rules change, are the same. This radio is neither an FRS or GMRS radio, keep what you want, remove what you don't want.
I loaded all of the NOAA weather channels, but do not seem to get any reception on any of them, although I know they broadcast non-stop. Is there something else I need to do in the setup? Problem exists whether I scan (and do not skip channel) or input the frequency directly.
No. If you can't pick up a NOAA frequency in VFO mode by directly entering a frequency, then this is not a CHIRP issue.
Is there a way to jump directly to a specific channel in memory, instead of having to step through one at a time using the arrow keys?
Key in the 3 digit channel number. To go to channel 73, key in [0][07][3]. Also not a CHIRP issue.
Is there a way to link the frequency AND the corresponding channel name in the display, either on the A/B display lines (frequency on one and name on the other) or by toggling between frequency and channel mode to see both pieces of data on the same line (A or B)?
Yes. Read the manual. It is menu 24 (SYNC). Detailed Menu Definitions: https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_MenuDef.php
Once I load all the desired frequencies from the Chirp stock configuration lists into memory, do I need to modify any of the individual column settings that were loaded into each frequency line?
You should. For example the NOAA channels and any other channels that you do not/should not transmit on should have Duplex set to "off". GMRS repeater channels may require a CTCSS tone or DTCS tone. It is all dependent on your location and what your requirements are. For example I set all of the transmitting channels to the LOW power level and only toggle to the HIGH power level when necessary by tapping the [#] key.
Jim KC9HI
Jim, Thanks for the manual, which I did not have, and other feedback. It helps a lot. However, menu #24 does not appear to be a "SYNC" option, but rather an "AUTOLOCK" option. Am I missing something?

You still haven't mentioned which country you are in. Although the satellites transmit most of the time, they are not geostationary so do not appear over your position all the time. John,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I did explain in my first email that I am in the USA (North Carolina). I don’t understand the failure to receive continuous NOOAA broadcasts, which I easily do on a shortwave and FRS/GMRS radios. They are continuous weather broadcasts that don’t depend on satellite positioning. Apparently, there is a way to do the simultaneous display, but not on a UV-5R; only on an UV-5xe – bummer.

Hello Rich,
I checked and the BTECH UV-5X3
No manual is available. Since the frequency range for reception is not specified and you cannot receive NOAA broadcasts, I would strongly suspect that those frequencies are NOT supported.
Maybe they will be supported someday in updated firmware.
I was going to chide you for asking so many product specific questions, but now I see why you are doing so, the product specification sheet and owner's manual are simply unavailable. That's certainly forgivable. I'd ask too!
Contact the distributor and see if they can get an owner's manual for you, the transceiver appears to be so new it is not available on the Internet.

I received my UV-5x3 two days ago. It is specifically from BTech. It came with a well written manual. I have been able after programing it in Chirp to get NOAA. It was down for 12 hours though due to weather. I have barely heard anything on mine. This is only a 5w unit. I will probably have to go up on the hill in my town to see how what I can actually receive. I am hitting two repeaters just no traffic. I purchased a better antenna, a triband so I don't have to swap out antennas.
I am awaiting another better antenna, 39", with a ground base, and a magnetic vehicle base. I am hoping if I have someone drives me around I will be able to hit more repeaters.
How far are you from the closest repeater ? Have you tried going to a higher part of town ? There may he an obstruction. A 5 watt HT with a duck antenna doesn't have the ability to do what a base or mobile unit with a big antenna and 50 watts can do.
If there is a specific question, I would he glad to tell you what the manual says.
It's strange you didn't get a manual. Did you get it from BTech ? It may be a knockoff. The Beofeng 888's I bought to keep for emergencies were either knockoffs or from Beofeng in China instead of BTech that based in the US.
The Beofeng 888s came with a cable and a CD, I have read those aren't genuine cables. But I already had a genuine cable that I bought with the UV-5x3.
I programed the 888s (4 of them) in Chirp within minutes. It's a really easy to use software once you get the hang of it. Make sure you create an image of the radio and save it so you can go back to "factory" settings if you need to..
Here is a link to a PDF version of the UV-5x3 manual.

I have loaded many frequencies from the Chirp stock configuration list,
which was actually pretty easy, once you understand the steps. However, this has now led to a few new questions:
In the FRS/GMRS category, it loaded what appears to be identical
frequencies for 20 channels in each of these groups (Channel 1-20 for each group is the same). Is there a reason for this redundancy or can I delete one range?
I loaded all of the NOAA weather channels, but do not seem to get any
reception on any of them, although I know they broadcast non-stop. Is there something else I need to do in the setup? Problem exists whether I scan (and do not skip channel) or input the frequency directly.
Is there a way to jump directly to a specific channel in memory, instead
of having to step through one at a time using the arrow keys?
Is there a way to link the frequency AND the corresponding channel name
in the display, either on the A/B display lines (frequency on one and name on the other) or by toggling between frequency and channel mode to see both pieces of data on the same line (A or B)?
Once I load all the desired frequencies from the Chirp stock
configuration lists into memory, do I need to modify any of the individual column settings that were loaded into each frequency line?
Thanks,
Rich

A bug still present in CHIRP: If your serial port number is above COM10, chirp does not work properly. Guess how I know? :D

You still haven't mentioned which country you are in. Although the satellites transmit most of the time, they are not geostationary so do not appear over your position all the time. You need to which satellites pass over your position and when they are due to pass over. You will only hear a signal during a pass. There are prediction programs you can download such as Gpredict and Orbitron to help you determine that.

Indirectly he did. NOAA weather radio is a land based service only in the USA.

Nearly every model in Baofeng Tech's (the radio dealer in the USA) BTECH brand of radios, including the UV-5X3 mentioned here, has the built-in SYNC feature that will automatically keep the A and B display lines synchronized to the same channel. I believe the only BTECH branded model without channel SYNC is the UV-50X3.

Rich,
- What frequencies should I load into memory slots?
That will depend on your area of interest. Your radio is FM only so this is likely to include local FM repeaters, any frequencies used by your local club for its activities (e.g. "nets") and any that are of specific interest that you therefore might end up using regularly. For example I have the ISS (145.800) programmed into mine because I sometimes like to receive SSTV images that they send out from time to time.
- If I don’t load a frequency into a memory slot, does that mean I can’t RX/TX on that frequency?
Not at all. Programming a frequency into a memory just allows you easily recall it by name or memory slot number. When programming in a repeater frequency you can also conveniently set the offset and CTCSS tone. On an analog radio you should be able to tune in to any frequency within its range and listen in but the radio will need to be in VFO mode as opposed to memory mode. The UV-5R has an orange button on the front to allow you to switch between the two modes. Once you are licensed as a radio amateur you can also Tx but be aware that your license will allow you to transmit within the amateur radio bands only. For example, your radio covers the PMR frequency range, but it is unlikely to be legal to transmit on those frequencies using this radio because it is not designed to PMR radio specifications and exceeds the max power output that is legally permitted for PMR transmissions. Don't assume that just because the radio is capable or a band is license free, that it is automatically OK to transmit on it. Details for the Rx and Tx frequency ranges the radio is capable of should be covered in the manual, but it is also worth being familiar with the bandplan and regulations governing usage in your country. Going off subject a little here perhaps but it is good to be aware.
How do I know what frequencies to use for repeaters in my area (or outside of my area)?
To find repeaters in your country/area you could have a look at https://repeaterbook.com/.
BTW, this is for a mobile Mirkit Baofeng UV-5R MK5 radio.
Its a good choice for a first transceiver and to have a general listen around.
