[chirp_users] TYT DMR Radios
Good morning and happy new year all,
I was wondering if there were any plans to add functionality to chirp to support the TYT DMR radios, such as their MD-2017 (...so last year) or MD-380 for example?
That's all for now, 73
Neil (M6LPI)
Why do you need it. There is already excellent freeware software that allows you to program them. Happy New Year. 73's Alan - W6ARH

Does it run on all the platforms that chirp runs on?
I also like chirp...

As a regular Chirp user and also a Linux user, support of the DMR transceivers would be welcome. I have to keep an old XP machine around for the DMR software. With chirp I could also share my analog UHF repeater channels with the the DMR unit.

Not trying to be a downer but the complexity of DMR configuartions would be a major effort in Chirp unless you constrained it to only analog settings. I may be wrong but perhaps a dedicated young programmer would be willing to accept the challenge. Alan - W6ARH

I doubt it judging by the quality of most manufacturer's software.
Does the manufacturer's software run on OSX or Linux?

Yes, we all use DMRTools on the MD-380 and similar, but still have to fall back on the stinking TYT software to actually generate the code plug, sure would like to be able to use one piece of software to do it. The TYT software runs under wine but it cannot see the dongle as wine does not appear to be able to handle USB devices so you have to make it a two step process as far as I can see.
Yes we will need to find someone who can take on the Chirp work, as it is more than just a bit trivial to add the DMR stuff, but maybe someone will emerge. There are a lot of MD-380 people out there who would like to be able to use Chirp for the radio maybe one is a coder and will step forward.

If you are having trouble getting USB serial working in wine under linux, try this post:

I do a lot of micro controller programming and debugging using serial interfaces and I have used it to get several different things working

Per http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids , this seems like 0483:df11 is:

That's NOT a serial port.

Yep that is what it is. And of course why it does not come up in the /dev.
Am testing the editcp program out now.

I have a Mac running high Sierra. The latest version. I’ve downloaded all of the correct drivers from what I can tell. Run python and when i look at the radio options where I tell it what radio I am using and what port it doesn’t show one for the cable.

Yes we will need to find someone who can take on the Chirp work, as it is more than just a bit trivial to add the DMR stuff, but maybe someone will emerge. There are a lot of MD-380 people out there who would like to be able to use Chirp for the radio maybe one is a coder and will step forward.

Good morning and happy new year all,
I was wondering if there were any plans to add functionality to chirp to support the TYT DMR radios, such as their MD-2017 (...so last year) or MD-380 for example?
That's all for now, 73

Having edited a DMR codeplug, I can see it's a major job to move that complexity into Chirp. I don't know who drives the codeplug effort. I got the TYT software to run under WINE and, like you, could not get the USB connection to be "seen" by WINE. Oh well, I found sources for inexpensive old laptops running XP and Win 7 so if my old beast fails I guess that's what I will do.

https://www.farnsworth.org/dale/codeplug/editcp/ worked quite nicely for me.
It doesn't resolve the 'one program' issue, but it let me edit the codeplug and the use the md380tools to program the rig.
Does the "excellent freeware software" allow me to program the conventional frequencies that I already have in Chirp without having to retype them?

There is a Chirp driver for the MD-380 that can handle conventional channels: https://github.com/travisgoodspeed/md380tools/blob/master/chirp/md380.py
There's a lot of UI work required to add a talkgroup/contact editor to Chirp. I never finished this part.
