For a strictly analog UHF / VHF hand-held, I would highly recommend the Yaesu FT-60R. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other Yaesu handi-talkies, but the radio is compact, sounds great, receives 1000% better than the Baofeng I own and is only $159 .

Not to mention it has got to be the easiest ht to manually program.

Agreed. I have zero use for digital and the receiver in the FT-60 is better than any handheld scanner I’ve ever had. And yes, not too difficult to program from the keypad.
