For a strictly analog UHF / VHF hand-held, I would highly recommend the Yaesu FT-60R.  It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other Yaesu handi-talkies, but the radio is compact, sounds great, receives 1000% better than the Baofeng I own and is only $159 .
