[chirp_users] chirp on Chromebook
Ay of you running C Are any of you running chirp on a recent Chromebook?. All the searching I've done brings up results from a year or more ago. I'm assuming that installing some version of wine is still the way to go. Suggestions on how to proceed greatly appreciated.
I don’t think you can install anything on a Chromebook. I’ll find out though.

Not without some trickery, unless Google really does end up making a new Chromebook that will dual boot into Windows 10, as rumored.

I know there isn't Chrome OS or Android specific versions of chirp available. What, apparently, can be done is install an Android, possibly Chrome OS (?), app or extension of Wine (a Windows emulator), on the Chromebook. Install chirp in Wine and should be good to go. Possible there's a similar way of installing the Linux version of chirp?, A Linux emulator?
One might be able to install Ubuntu Mate (or another distro) onto the Chromebook and make it a dual-boot system. Glenn

You can't dual boot without replacing the BIOS. You're stuck with Crouton for now.

Chromebooks can run Linux apps now (or at least some of them can). I've not tried it, though (I have a really old Chromebook). But if you want to run CHIRP on a Chromebook, that seems like the most likely way to do so.

There are lots of different ways to *try* to run Windows software on a Chromebook:
https://www.howtogeek.com/173353/how-to-run-windows-software-on-a-chromebook...
... My guess is that none will work well with regards to accessing the USB port on the device.
I am a VMware Workstation owner since version 2.04, and a Connectix Virtual PC user on Macintosh since long before Microsoft bought that product and sold a version for the Wintel platform. IIRC, USB port sharing was not in the original feature set for either product. So the virtual machine based solutions in that article may not provide any access to your radio.
Anyway, based on that article, you'll have more options with an Intel (vs. ARM) based Chromebook. In which case, maybe install Windows there instead?

Here's how to run Linux apps on Chromebook (if you have the requisite version of ChromeOS, etc.)
https://www.howtogeek.com/363331/how-to-set-up-and-use-linux-apps-on-chrome-...
Also found an old (2 years old) Reddit article where someone mentions in passing running CHIRP using Crouton on a Chromebook (and that it was working for them). Crouton lets you run Linux apps on ChromeOS. But its function has been rolled into ChromeOS now (see the link above).

Seriously _not_. See my disclaimer below. That was just a joke regarding the limited capabilities of the platform. Also a test of the potential depth of any flame wars on this list. Looks like I've already hit bottom with that. ;^)

They are rolling out Linux support to some of the Chromebooks. I don't know, yet, if it will come to my Asus C302CA with m3-6y30 processor. That would be the way to go if it does.
My Chromebook was on the list for Google Play rollout, but it never came. I'm guessing I won't get this, either. It would be nice to have something very portable and inexpensive to take to club meetings, etc., to do programming for people.

A bit off-topic perhaps, but how about installing Linux on an Android tablet?
http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Features/Convert-an-Android-Device-to-L...
https://www.androidauthority.com/install-ubuntu-on-your-android-smartphone-7...
Again, not sure how well this will work with the Android USB port. And in any case you would likely need a USB Micro to Type A female adapter for your programming cable.

Why not use a Bluetooth RS-232 adapter? I see them on line some of them even indicate that they are used for android.

I guess that might work? But again, not sure how well Bluetooth works in Linux wedged into an Android device.
And prices for these Bluetooth serial adapter start in the $50 range. But you can get a whole set of various USB size and gender adapters for about $10.
Here is the first Bluetooth serial adapter I found in DuckDuckGo:
http://www.usconverters.com/serial-bluetooth-adapter
The data sheet has an interesting note on hardware compatibility:
http://www.usconverters.com/downloads/ucbt232b_exa/ucbt232b-and-ucbt232exa-s...
"Chipset: CSR BlueCore4 model BC417"
"Works with iPad/iPod? No, it will not work with iPads/iPods due to the restrictions Apple put on their Bluetooth chipset, however it does work with most other Bluetooth enabled smartphones, tablets and devices"
Anyway, if the objective is to have a portable radio programming station for as cheap and "easy" as possible, then personally I would try Linux on an Android tablet with a USB connector adapter, based on what I already have laying around. But that's just me.

I have a couple of those "multi-port" dongles that plug into the port where the charge cable goes on the Samsung tablets, I have a couple of 10.1 notes, the one that came out in 2012 or there about, then they did only ONE upgrade to it. Still a great slab, I am thinking about trying to put Linux on it as that would make a great Chirp slab, and should allow me to keep MS at bay. I know that Chirp at least the GUI part of it will not run under Android, but if I can put Linux on the device that should take care of it. I will find my handy dandy adapter, though the BT serial port is attractive. I see a lot of them on EBay... Some pretty cheap... (probably more than one way too)

Interesting idea. But my intent is to use the Chromebook I currently have without having to modify it or buy yet another device to have to keep track of.

I doubt it. They've been rolling out Android support for Chromebooks for a couple of years and not yet got far.

The following command from the Chromebook command line will get you up and going from what I can see:
dev_install
You will need to be in developer mode, google it as it may be different based on your rev level of ChromeOS.
Also in the Chrome Web store there is Python. Here is the URL: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/python/nodpmmidbgeganfponihbgmfcoi...

To run Chirp on Chromebook you'll need to install a full copy of Linux.
