Hi all,
I bought a Baofeng branded cable and have now tried it on two different Windows laptops. Neither one sees the device. What cable really works with the F8HP?

Hi Rick,
The Baofeng branded cable has an unauthorized copy of the Prolific USB-to-TTL chip in it. The automatically installed driver is (intentionally) not compatible. You have to downgrade your Prolific driver to an older, compatible driver
v3.2.0.0 (Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) v2.0.2.1 (Windows XP)
See the miklor.com website for the driver and installation instructions. http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php

Jim, thanks, I know you replied before. I will try your approach again and see if it is any better.
Thanks!!

Follow the instructions in the guide step by step to select it. If you don't select it as shown in the guide, Windows will continue to use the latest driver and the programming cable will continue to fail to function properly.

Windows won't recognize the cable without the correct driver installed.
With the cable removed, you execute the driver to install it into the computer/ Then you plug it in. It may not be detected as a serial port yet. There are pictures in the guide for the two possibilities. You then follow the instructions to select the newly installed driver. Once the drive is selected the programming cable will be detected and the port assigned. It is all in the guide. You just have to follow it carefully step by step.

Sure it will. Plug the cable into any Windows computer and it will show up in device manager as a USB to Serial device or whatever. No need for any drivers for Windows to see the cable.
It just won't WORK without the drivers.
@Clarence It doesn't matter, the cable will be recognized by Windows regardless of whether the radio is attached to it or not.

Tony, you're not helping!
Until the older driver is installed properly, it won't recognize the cable.
Unless every step is followed EXACTLY, the older driver won't be installed.
Take it from someone who was convinced that I had followed every direction, several times.
When you finally do it right, it will work.

If the cable that is being used has a cloned or counterfeit Prolific chip, Windows will load the latest Prolific driver. That driver will recognize the counterfeit chip and will Fail. This is by design to discourage counterfeiters. The only way to get around it is to do what Jim suggested. Load a backdated driver. Preferably Win7 Prolific 3.2.0.0 or XP Prolific 2.0.2.1.

That is all set up to work. That will confirm the cable works.

Tony, you're not helping!
Until the older driver is installed properly, it won't recognize the cable.
Unless every step is followed EXACTLY, the older driver won't be installed.
Take it from someone who was convinced that I had followed every direction, several times.
When you finally do it right, it will work.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys... I tried reseating the cable into the laptop on all available usb ports and at best it now forces the ht into transmit mode. To clarify the other point.... I have loaded the old version v3.2.0.0 and will use that if my windows os ever sees the device. I tried on my wifes laptop and same results.

What you said is all true however first you need to get Windows to recognize the cable.

Once you can see it in device manager you can then load the OLD (2007) drivers (below) and it will work perfect.

Cables are $5-25 on amazon. The reviews online indicate these cables can be problematic depending on source. I would lean towards a bad cable. Had luck with my V-82 and cable. I actually cheered when it connected after reading the cable reviews.

Tony, you're not helping!
Until the older driver is installed properly, it won't recognize the cable.
Unless every step is followed EXACTLY, the older driver won't be installed.
Take it from someone who was convinced that I had followed every direction, several times.
When you finally do it right, it will work.

He’s not even at the point where drivers are needed.
He can’t even get Windows to recognize the cable.
Repeating “Read the instructions” over and over without offering any actual advice is a waste of everybody’s time.
C’mon…

Follow the instructions in the guide step by step to select it. If you don't select it as shown in the guide, Windows will continue to use the latest driver and the programming cable will continue to fail to function properly.

Tony,
It does not show up in device manager. I have re-installed the v3.2.0.0 version, plugged in the usb cable and in phone and nothing.... no recognition at all.

Hi all,
I bought a Baofeng branded cable and have now tried it on two different Windows laptops. Neither one sees the device. What cable really works with the F8HP?

Rick,
Did you try using a different USB port? Try using one opposite of the one you are using now. (front/back)
They are usually on different hubs and sometimes that will do the trick.
Sounds to me like you might have a bad cable, as rare as that would be.
Do you have another machine you can try it on?

Rick- The same thing happened to me during several attempts to connect my laptop to the F8HP. After several days of flailing about I discovered that I was not completely connecting the cable to the F8HP port -- I need to "force" the cable into the port; make sure that it is pushed in all the way and properly seated. I have not had any problems since then. Clarence

Yes. I see it and there is no exclamation mark. But I have made some exclamations of my own which I will not print here! Bob Brennan

I have a UV5R and have the same problem with my laptop. somewhere (Baofengtech.com?) I've read that laptops may have a problem with a Power Saving Manager. I tried to close that but couldn't really find anything like that on my laptop. Good luck! Bob Brennan
