I have just recently purchased a Baofeng BF-F8HP and installed Chirp on my Mac Pro. I am unable to connect to the radio to download the initial configuration. I played around with all of the suggested tip and tricks for the Mac (running High Sierra) and was not able to get the software to talk to the radio.
I pulled out an old Windows 7 laptop and installed the latest versions of Chirp and Prolific drivers for my USB-to-Serial cable and all works perfectly...
So, this tells me that the radio is working as designed and the cable is working with the latest Prolific drivers.

All linux versions must have at least a free version. You can however, charge to service a Linux computer. Apple is proprietary and all is paid.

Please let’s not start another OS war. I use Mac OS X by choice, and I do not criticize Windows or Linux users.
Here the problem is not an OS problem, but a driver problem. To me it looks like Prolific has trouble to support OS X. I remember going through hoops when I tried to use a Prolific chip in my MacBook. I remember that I had to pick a specific driver, and I tried to help the Mac users here, but it looks like now with High Sierra, it has become a lost battle. To program my radios, I use a cable that has an FTDI chip, so I do not have any problem with all the radios that I programmed.
I do not have the Prolific cable anymore, so I cannot help much anymore.
So to all Mac OS X users, I would suggest to buy an interface cable that has an FTDI chip instead of a Prolific chip.
Ham Radio is about helping each other, not blaming someone else.

After a lot of searching for drivers and looking at recommended cables to purchase, I came across an app that is free and is able to identify which chipset your cable is using. It can be downloaded from https://www.mac-usb-serial.com/ and correctly identified my cable as having the pl2303 chipset. The best part is that for a small fee ($10 USD,) THEY HAVE WORKING DRIVERS FOR THE PROLIFIC CHIPPED CABLES!
Radio and computer are now happily talking to each other!
Hello Mac user
i use a my Mac Mini from day one when using Chirp i did not install Drivers when Programming my Baofeng Yaeasu and Retevis radio’s and has worked well with the Mac the Mac finds the drivers it need’s It did find that If I use a barcode scanner by just plug it in the usb it won’t work only If I boot the mac with it plugged in so may be you need to plug you cable in before you boot up your Mac maybe its worth a try ?
