[chirp_users] Baofeng error “radio not responding “
I’m trying to upload my Baofeng UV-9 plus radio and I’m in the correct port. I have a Baofeng cable with an updated ch340 driver. I’ve tried other drivers. Nothing works. Please help!?
Jeremiah W.
I'm unable to program my Baofeng UV-9 plus radio as well. I've been on you tube and searched the internet for instructions but have had no luck finding something that works. I have a Baofeng cable as well and have downloaded the Chirp software. I don't know how to tell if you are in the right port but it doesn't seem like any of them are working.
If anyone has any easy to understand instructions on how to program this radio please send them to me.
Thanks, Paul

The UV-9R is basically a UV-82 in a different case and only a single PTT button.

Paul, Sometimes you have to select a different Baofeng radio and it'll work. Are you first trying to "Download" from the radio? That has to be the first thing you do because Chirp needs to know how to handle the radio you have connected. Dean

Hi Dean,
I hit the "download from radio" and absolutely nothing happens. The radio is on and the cable is tightly secured (as much as possible). The screen remains blank and I don't get a box to enter any other information. It's possible I could have a defective cable I suppose.
Thanks again, Paul

Paul,
If you are running Windows, use the Device Manager application to determine exactly which port is assigned to your programming cable.
You should be able to plug in your programming cable and see the port assignment appear under "Ports (COM & LPT)". This is also where you would determine which chip is in the programming cable and the version of the driver is installed.

Jeremiah,
What is the error message, or better yet, attach the CHIRP debug.log file.

Jim,
I'm not getting an error message at all. I don't think the computer is recognizing the radio.
Thanks for your response.

Paul,
If you tried to download from your radio and forgot to plug the cable into your radio, you would get an error.
So just close CHIRP (to close the debug.log file), open CHIRP (to start a new debug.log file), attempt a download, and finally close CHIRP.
Now attach the debug.log file.
How to locate the debug.log file for all supported operating systems is in the CHIRP Documentation area. Here is a direct link to the page you need.

Thanks Jim,
I'm not very good with computers and was unable to complete sending the debug file. I think I'll knock off for the day and regroup. Maybe try again tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help.,

Hi Jim,
Sorry to bother you again.
I have come to the conclusion that I may have a defective cable or the cable is not seating enough to make sufficient contact. I hit the "download from radio" and absolutely nothing happens. The radio is on and the cable is tightly secured (as much as possible). The screen remains blank and I don't get a box to enter any other information. This radio (UV 9R Plus) has a unique cable that differs from other Baofengs.
I'm about ready to send the radio and cable back and buy a different radio. I picked this one because it is waterproof.
You have been very kind with your suggestions.
Thanks again, Paul

Paul,
If you choose "Download From Radio" and don't get a "Radio" dialog box that allows you to choose the Port, Vendor and Model, then you have a problem with your CHIRP installation. I would uninstall CHIRP, reboot for good measure, and then install CHIRP again. If you are running Windows, I would right-click the CHIRP installer file and then choose "Run as administrator" even if the Windows user is already an administrator.
And this isn't CHIRP related, but none of the so-called "waterproof" Baofeng radio models are waterproof. At best they can be described as water resistant.
Jim
Paul, I just looked up the radio and cable for the radio you are talking about. Did you install the cable driver software BEFORE plugging in the USB cable? If not, Windows is probably loading it's own driver. The cable I see for your radio uses the PL2303 driver. There are some Generic cables out there and It won't work with the default Windows driver. All is not lost though, with the cable plugged in, go to the Device Driver section of your Control Panel and select the com port that shows up. Select change driver. This is all explained quite well on the Miklor site so read the section that deals with Generic cables and drivers. Just try this as a last resort before packing up the radio and sending it off. I hope this helps. If you lived in the Milwaukee area, I would be happy to help. Dean

Thanks guys! I deleted the Chirp app, rebooted, and reinstalled the app. I now have the dialog box and will attempt to program a few things.
You guys are great! Thank you for your help! I was getting pretty frustrated.
