[chirp_users] Chirp w/MacBook Air
First post.... Bought the baofeng uv5r, and cable, from amazon. I've tried all the drivers I can find but don't see the MacBook recognizing the USB cable. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Steve, Have you tried these drivers? You'll need to know which cable you have. THe cables have electronics in them.

Dave,
Unfortunately I bought this cable…ugh.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RZJHJU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UT...
I believe I’ve tried ALL these drivers, but I’ll look through them again.
Thanks, Steve N9DHH

Hey Steve, from the reviews at the amazon link you provided, I gather that this cable uses a "counterfeit" of the Prolific chip. Pretty common. I'd give a try to the "Generic" PL 2303 driver & see how that goes. http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/MacOS_Tips
If you have too many drivers loaded, that might be a problem, so you might consider trying to simplify and pull the excess drivers out, although if you select the correct driver, it will probably work anyway.
What Mac OSX are you using?
If it gets too frustrating, just get a FTDI cable and your problems will be over. The FTDI cables cost more (like $23) but no hassle. Kind of crazy that the whole radio can cost under $40, but the programming cable costs more than half that.
If you decide to go with a FTDI cable, I think you'd use this one: http://www.valley-ent.com/catalog/kenwood-2pin-radio-programming-cable-ftdi-...
BTW: the radio MUST be on channel mode rather than frequency mode.
Also, on some models the cable doesn't want to push all the way into the jack. Some people have had to trim the cable or plastic housing around the hole to get it clearance to plug all the way in.

There is a driver install package that Jens put together and I forget where he put it on the net that works with very Prolific cable counterfeit or not on OSX Mountain Lion + 32 or 64 bit. I know where the driver package is but the installer is in spanish. That's what I used at first up to OSX 64 bit Mavericks. I installed Jens package and it removed the spanish driver and another driver I installed at first that didn't work. So Jens package cleans things up. I hope Jens can chime in here with the link. I might still have that file on my MacBook Pro but I don't know where I could stick it for those Mac users who might need it. Main thing is don't give up. I waited 2 months before I came across by data mining the right driver and since I know enough about the package install process and some spanish I had no problem getting my Prolific cable to play nice with Lion 64, then Mountain Lion 64 and onward to the current version.

David, I respectfully disagree. When using CHIRP to program a UV-5R, it makes no difference if the radio is in VFO (frequency) or MR (channel) mode. It also doesn't matter if the A (top) line or B (bottom) line is selected.
When programming the UV-5R using the keypad, the radio MUST be in VFO mode with the A line selected.

Thanks, Dave, I’m running 10.9.2
I’ll see if I can figure out how to uninstall all the drivers I’ve tried. I’ve tried the driver referenced, but I don’t see anything when I go into terminal and run the command referenced. The only think I see is the bluetooth modem listing.

Find the driver package assembled by Jens , of the Chirp team. I forget where it is but some Google trickery should reveal its locaction. You just right click on it and choose run. If your Mac nanny asks do you want to run this from an untrusted source or something like that say yes and follow the install GUI dialog. No reason to run any install script from a terminal. I've done this with the original pkg installer in spanish and then with Jens' pkg. Jens' removes any previous drivers. It works great my only fault was not to bookmark the installer file although I do have it on my MacBook.

I bookmarked the page so I'll be able to send Mac users there. And I see you are using Yahoo email. How is it still working for you? I wasn't getting anything from the list by my comments to the list were making it to the list and I suppose getting distributed. So I switch to gmail, my messages get to the list and go out but gmail won't allow a copy of my comment to be sent back. Man what it would do to the idiots who thought this DMARC crap up. I still get loads of spam, it only affected email I want.
