[chirp_users] Csv files
I just saved my current chirp image as a CSV file to my Documents folder. Upon examining that folder I found all my other image saves, but alas, no CSV file. I tried to save 3 more times but no joy. anybody have any ideas where this might be going? I am running Windows Vista on a laptop.
I assume you used File/Export, then selected a name at the "Save As" pop-up and clicked "Save".
That doesn't actually create the CSV file. It causes an "Export To File" pop-up to open. The file will be created after you select the channels you want and then hit "OK".
Is that possibly what's happening to you? Failing that, using Windows' file search should allow you to find the CSV file.

Hi Dave, thanks for responding. I'm afraid I didn't make myself quite as clear as I should have. I read somewhere that you can convert the image to a CSV file in order to print out a hard copy of what is in the memories. that is what I was trying to do. I did run a Windows Search for the CSV file and it came up empty so I don't know what is happening to it. On Nov 11, 2015 12:16 AM, "Dave VK2FDJS" vk2fdjs@gmail.com wrote:

Hi Gary
I don't think you can convert the image file to CSV. I think the CSV file can only be created by the File/Export option. This sends out the frequency information, which is most of what you'd want, but is not a conversion of the entire image file.
Could you step us through what you actually did to attempt to create your CSV file? I'll try it on CHIRP here.
Could you also confirm your operating system? (I'm using Windows 7.)

The above is a quote taken directly from the chirp programming guide found on the miklor website. These are the instructions I tried to use to create the CSV file for printing. my OS is Windows Vista running on my laptop. Everything about chirp seems to be running perfectly except for that one function. I would also like to take this opportunity to hopefully put a bug in someone's ear that might be reading this post to develop what is necessary to operate chirp on a smartphone to be able to easily reprogram a radio while out in the field. OK, that's what I was referring to in my first reply.
Haven't read the Help, but it looks incomplete.
When you select CSV in the Export pop-up and name the file and click Save, it does not create the CSV file.
Instead, it opens another pop-up with tick-boxes against the various channels. You adjust these if you need to and then click OK.
Then it creates the CSV file.

At first I was confused by the export to file popup. I couldn't figure out what it was for so I just X'ed out of it. Then after following instructions in a previous post, all the boxes having been already ticked, I just clicked on OK and boom, it was done. with a bit of a smile I went to my documents folder and... No CSV file. at least it was not LABLED csv. just for the heck of it I click on the file and my calc program came up with all the data in the file on the screen. From there I was able to print and have a hard copy of all the data in the file which is what I was after in the first place. so many thanks to all those that offered their assistance. I finally got it through my thick skull and all is well in the world. thanks again to all.

Printing the CHIRP frequency list With the frequency list displayed on your computer Select: FILE / EXPORT Select the Location where file is to be saved Select: .CSV format and SAVE You can now alter the appearance and print the .CSV file.

Hi Gary I don't think you can convert the image file to CSV. I think the CSV file can only be created by the File/Export option. Could you step us through what you actually did to attempt to create your CSV file? I'll try it on CHIRP here. Could you also confirm your operating system? (I'm using Windows 7.) OK, that's what I was referring to in my first reply.

As a follow up I had subsequently tried to export the data into a spreadsheet program. whereupon it automatically reverted to the calc program. Windows file explorer usually defaults to masking known file extensions during display. Since double clicking the file opened your calc program, Windows knows that file extension and associates it with the calc program rather than Excel.
Right click->properties on the filename should show the complete name.
Right click->"Open with" may be available to direct Windows to Excel rather than Calc. Otherwise, drag and drop the filename on Excel to open as a spreadsheet. The CSV column data does not match exactly what you see in the CHIRP memories tab. The CSV file contains the column values required by CHIRP import, where the memories tab displays the data in a user friendly form.

(I'm using Windows 7.) I'm afraid I didn't make myself quite as clear as I should have. I read somewhere that you can convert the image to a CSV file in order to print out a hard copy of what is in the memories. that is what I was trying to do. I did run a Windows Search for the CSV file and it came up empty so I don't know what is happening to it. That doesn't actually create the CSV file. It causes an "Export To File" pop-up to open. The file will be created after you select the channels you want and then hit "OK". Is that possibly what's happening to you? Failing that, using Windows' file search should allow you to find the CSV file.

The default for Windows is to "hide" the extension for files that are associated to an application. A CSV file would be associated to Office excel or any other spreadsheet program that you have installed on your computer so the CSV extension would not be seen. Whenever I install Windows on a computer, this is one of the first things I disable. I want to see the extensions of all or my files.
