Re: [chirp_users] The VHF low band is still in use
With the open spaces, large patrol areas and such, vhf LO is probably the best band out there for them.

Actually, one of the main reasons for California’s use of low-band VHF is because a large portion of California is mountainous and higher frequencies simply require a lot more infrastructure in the way of repeaters to be able to cover the same areas with hills and valleys. This would result in much higher costs for reliable coverage.

Every time I start up Chirp, I see the reference to the 6m band and look forward to the day I can get a 'Chirpable' radio that covers that band. Last rig I had in that band was an old Clegg 6'er.
Any rig in particular that has that coverage working exceptionally well with Chirp as the programming tool ?

Bought, and awaiting arrival of the Yaesu VX-8DR (liked the feature of APRS compatability, and being waterproof to 3ft for 10mins), looking forward to getting it Chirped up once the obstacle of not having a platform to run the latest build is solved..
Probably going to end up burning a FULL backup of OS, data, and media to DVD from the netbook (the only TRUE computer I have left), wiping the Debian Squeeze v6 and installing the latest Ubuntu, or other distro - if someone has a better idea of another that works better with Chirp..

Debian works fine with CHIRP, and ditto to Ubuntu and Mint – just remember that you need to add the repository that includes chirp-daily. Add this and you’re good to go. Details are at the CHIRP website.

Debian Squeeze does not work fine with the Chirp dailys, or I wouldn't have a problem. Squeeze (Deb v6), is missing a couple important utilities in the libraries that are required for running 'chirpw' and having it config correctly.
It would be a major update to get my Debian install to accept those changes.
I'm tired of messing with it. I've mostly changed over to Android for my computer activities.

Andy's HamRadio ISO (works on X86 PCs only) is perfect for this:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/kb1oiq-andysham/
I'd recommend to install it on a larger USB stick that supports a read/write partition. WIth that setup, you can then upgrade Chirp, configure all the other programs in there and it's all persistent. The next time you boot it, everything is there as you left it. Very slick.

Actually Glenn, that's not a bad idea. I have a spare 64gb thumb that I installed PuppyLinux on, but couldn't get it to access the wifi nic, so useless for using with Chirp. Not sure if Ubuntu full would install on the thumb or not. May try that.
Getting really close to being off-topic, so going to move ahead with that plan off list.

Doesn't help the national interoperability thing that FEMA are implementing though. Any officer should be able to function anywhere in the country.
But then.... it is California.
