[chirp_users] Yaesu FT-7900 R/E question
This is a fine program, and it works perfectly with my BAOFENG UV5RA, but for the life of me I can not get CHIRP to see my Yaesu FT-7900 R/E. I have tried to use BOTH Mac and Windows, and while there are many other Yaesu models, the 7900 does not show up on the list. I see from some others here that they have brought it up.
Please help me, at least show me how to ask others how to get my computers to see my Yaesu.
Apple Macintosh CHIRP 0.3.0 GTK 2.24.10 PyGTK 2.22.0 Python 2.7.2
Thank you in advance
Mark Fernandez
The 7900 will not show in the list of radios in Chirp unless Chirp has been modified to use it. Nor is it likely the 7900 will operate with the 7800 that is supported by Chirp. I've not heard of radios that work with Chirp while being undocumented to do so. I'm fairly certain Chirp looks for the radio ID when trying to read from it and simply won't allow its use for your sake.
I use for my FT8900 software from www.g4hfq.co.uk/ftb7900.htm and will work flawlessly with your FT7900 R/E. It's called FTB7900. You can test it out, you just can't write ti the radio unless you pay I think $15.00 US, well worth it. Hope you have the right cable. USB on one in and Mini 6 pin DIN on the other like most Yaesu mobiles use.
Good luck

This is NOT true. I have corrected you on this exact topic in the past:

Shove it Dan you f**king prick. Take me off your list. You've been NOTHING but a pain in my ass since I joined and I speak the absolute truth when I say support is NOT LIKEY to cross brands very often because simply put, Chirp is a crapshot at best to use even with the listed radios.
You're an absolute f**khead and I hope you have a set of balls to let the message post to see what some people think of your Tyrant and holier than thow attitude.

How enlightening...
This from someone who hides behind a moniker like "Phaeton" < phaeton@neo.rr.com>
Thanks for all your efforts Dan et al....
I hope nobody is offended that I censored out the vulgarities before letting that message through.
Please, lets not turn this one into another flame war. If you have comments for me on anything off the topic of actually using chirp, please send them privately.
Thanks!
Dan, I got a huge laugh out of it. I've had issues with chirp, but the issues are all traceable to the nature of timing-dependent Yaesu communications as I understand them. Having worked with i2c buses at work, I know how much fun that can be to program.
Anyway, thanks for the program and for the laugh.

Wow, first he says it is a fine program, then a crapshot. This was completely uncalled for Mark. Dan is volunteering and contributing his time, effort and money to build this application and offers it for FREE. READ FREE. He owes you nothing. No support, no help, nada. Duffy,
This is a fine program. I never bad mouthed it in any way. If I did not think it was great, I'd never would have asked for help getting to work for me. Why do you think I did a "crapshot" to Dan? All I did was ask for help and nothing more. I think his and others work is great. Did you by chance mix me up with another person?
Either way, I never meant to start a flame war. I love CHIRP. I just wanted to work with the FT-7900.
Dan, thank you very much for your input; and your efforts to make this CHIRP program. I did try in windows 7 to get CHIRP to see and work with the 7900 by way of the 7800. It came back with an error that it did not see header 0 so failed. Then I tried it on Mac and it will not see the connected port at all to even try to hook up to the 7900.
I think I might be missing a driver in both the Mac and in Windows 7.
Phaeton, thank you for your advice as well I will give that ftb-7900 a try if I can not get CHIRP to connect. Please dont become upset at anyone over my question. I am 100% new at this, and have zero idea on what and how to do this stuff.
Thank you all.

Based on that error, I think you may be right that you are missing a driver. Or maybe you didn't initiate the clone from the radio--this is required for the Yaesus. Both of these errors will occur regardless of the programming software you choose to use, the driver is the same.

Well, I thought of that clone setting on the radio, and CHIRP still gave me the same errors.
Where can I get a driver for either the Mac or Windows 7?

The radio will show something like "TX" on the lcd while it is sending data to Chirp. This is initiated by pressing a few buttons on the radio as described in the manual.
Where can I get a driver for either the Mac or Windows 7?
This totally depends on your usb cable, and serial cables don't require drivers.

While he goes by Phaeton here, he uses his real name on the Yahoo group for a recent Chinese dual-band mobile radio that he moderates with a very heavy hand.
When a person volunteered that he would be developing a readable manual for the radio on a wiki, the list owner said that wouldn't be allowed because it might contain incorrect information. So now there is a 2nd yahoo group for that radio with a different owner.
I don't really want to continue this thread, but I suspect some of the misguided bile will come up again in his yahoo group.
Dan, Tom, Marco, and others are doing a fabulous job volunteering to work on a free software project and running it more professionally than many paid projects I've been involved with at major firms.
Reverse engineering poorly documented radios is hard enough. The whole USB serial cable/driver debacle is a mess that is just adds to the confusion and saps productive energy from everyone involved. Yet Dan manages to keep chirp going on a very productive and positive direction.
Thanks Dan.

know what a jerk you are.
Dan, sorry about this uncalled for and
completely unreasonable post. Please know that 99.999% of the other clear thinking hams are very grateful for your time and effort.
Best Regards

Phaeton March 6, 2013 8:04 PM Shove it Dan you f**king prick.

Phaeton March 6, 2013 5:41 PM The 7900 will not show in the list of radios in Chirp unless Chirp has been modified to use it. Nor is it likely the 7900 will operate with the 7800 that is supported by Chirp. I've not heard of
radios
that work with Chirp while being undocumented to do so. I'm
fairly
certain Chirp looks for the radio ID when trying to read from it and simply won't allow its use for your sake.
I use for my FT8900 software from http://hwww.g4hfq.co.uk/ftb7900.htm%C2%A0and will work flawlessly with your FT7900 R/E. It's called FTB7900. You can test it out, you just can't write ti the radio unless you pay I think $15.00 US, well worth it. Hope you have the right cable. USB on one in and Mini 6 pin DIN on the other like most Yaesu mobiles use.
Good luck

Apple //GS March 6, 2013 5:20 PM This is a fine program, and it works perfectly with my BAOFENG UV5RA, but for the life of me I can not get CHIRP to see my Yaesu FT-7900 R/E. I have tried to use BOTH Mac and Windows,
and while there are many other Yaesu models, the 7900 does not show up on the list. I see from some others here that they have brought it up.
Please help me, at least show me how to ask others how to get my
computers to see my Yaesu.

I have had the opportunity to use this fine program with the PX-2R and it worked fine. I also had the chance to see how quickly Dan and his cohorts used my radio and returned it to me after reverse engineering it to write the PX-2R version. I asked to have the radio included and they did it. What more can you ask for! Steve KB1CHU
To "Phaeton",
Your obscenities only show your lack of maturity. Your leaving this list may be seen as a benefit to all.
You owe Dan an apology.
BTW: Likely is not spelled "LIKEY" and thou is not spelled "thow"

WOW, talk about an ungrateful person. DAN, THANK YOU FOR MAKING CHIRP. IT IS AWESOME. Believe me, we appreciate your efforts and hard work.
