[chirp_users] TSQL / CTCSS
I have no where else to ask this question.
Is TSQL the same as CTCSS?
The reason I am so intrigued is about this is
The other day my UV-5R was in scan mode and a repeater in Huntsville continually stopped my scan with a carrier or tone, not sure which yet. But I heard no audio. No matter where I set the squelch, even to 0 I got no audio. However, if I hit the Moni button I could hear the guys talking.
What was happening here?
Thanks in advance.
In 3 weeks I'll be W9BOQ if the FCC grants my vanity call sign.

CTCSS usually indicates the tone you must send to activate the repeater. TSQL usually means a tone must be sent from the repeater or other party so you can hear THEIR signal. You never NEED to use TSQL. The only time it comes in handy is if you are getting some kind of RFI or interference from another repeater. Turn TSQL off and you will probably be able to hear the repeater properly. Go to www.miklor.com for answers to FAQs.

So CTCSS is a more generic term for Tone and TSQL.
Still doesn't answer why I had to hit MONI to hear a repeater conversation.

Copy and paste just that line from your CHIRP file here for someone to look at, I guess you could attach the whole file. Hopefully a small error in it that is not in other repeaters you have programmed. You could compare it to other entries to look for something amiss before you submit it here.

BTW, it has to be the right tone frequency too, not just turning TSQL on or off.

Perhaps there are other and perhaps closer repeaters on the same frequency but using a different tone?
I think someone also suggested removing the tone from the decode side which should be the same as holding in the monitor button

Hi Dennis There is only two reasons you can only hear the repeater conversations when you push the monitor button on your radio.
1. You don’t have the correct decode tone programmed into your radio. Or 2. The repeater is not transmitting a ctcss tone. Best thing for you to do for the moment is to set your radio tone decode to “none” and then check with the repeater techs to see if, in-fact, they have tone encode enabled on this repeater. They may have either disabled it, or it’s different from the info you have received about this repeater. End of story.

or cts for short.
theres 2 parts of it, cts encode, to open repeaters, and cts decode(tsq)
it sound like you have tsq enabled also(with wrong code). hence having using monitor to hear.
but you need to have the right encode to open the repeater in first place. some repeaters dont passthru the cts tone.

In CHIRP, Tone is what you would set for transmitting to a repeater. ToneSql only affects receive, and isn't generally used.
But regardless of what values those might be set to, it's the Tone Mode setting that determines what happens when you're transmitting or receiving. If it's set to Tone or None, you'll hear everything on the frequency. Otherwise you'll be using that monitor button.
CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System, which is what you're using whenever there are tones involved during transmit or receive. Anything else is just a shorter version of the same, mainly because ten syllables is a hassle.

I use ToneSql all the time, as do many others. In a busy metro area, it is almost a must.
But regardless of what values those might be set to, it's the Tone Mode setting that determines what happens when you're transmitting or receiving. If it's set to Tone or None, you'll hear everything on the frequency. Otherwise you'll be using that monitor button.

TSQL will only work IF the repeater puts out a tone and IF you are set to receive the right tone. If in doubt, leave TSQL turned off.

CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System, which is what you're using whenever there are tones involved during transmit or receive. Anything else is just a shorter version of the same, mainly because ten syllables is a hassle.

In other words NEVER use tone squelch on receive unless you actually know how it works and know exactly what the hell you are doing.
Then if you do use tone squelch on receive, don't get on the internet and whine "I have the right frequencies programmed why can't I hear ___________ ?!?!?!"

Tone squelch can be useful in a repeater congested area, BUT only if the repeater operator has set up the machine for it. That option is not up to the repeater user.
ALSO - Someone commented that the transmit mode needs to be changed to Wide Band. This is CORRECT information for ALL ham repeaters unless their specific information states otherwise. The repeater (145.23 in Huntsville) is a wide-band machine.

It's true of most repeaters in the the American continent, however, the rest of the world has been narrow band for many years.
Officially, the US is also narrow band. Americans are just reluctant to change.
Same is true with metric measurements.
Use wide on a narrow system and your audio on speech peaks might be distorted. Use narrow on a wide system and you will get good audio quality albeit at a slightly lower level.

It depends on the age of the person you are talking to. When I first got into 2m FM 48 years ago, Wide was 15kHz deviation and barrow was 5kHz!
When you get down below 3kHz you are losing the FM effect.
There is no way we should be using the new narrow - our bands are barely occupied now, therefore no need for squeezing more in. Most of the repeaters I know if in my city have filters for 16F3 acceptance. (Carson's rule: 5 kHz deviation plus 3 kHz audio times 2)
When you get people using the new barrow on a repeater with 16F3 acceptance, there is a marked difference in audio level and susceptance to noise. It is difficult to listen to a multi-way QSO without riding the volume control up and down, and some of the people I hear on the repeater are so low that I can barely hear them when I have it turned all teh way up wit mobile noise.

You have programmed a receive CTCSS tone on the frequency/channel you were listening to. CTCSS is a form of selective squelch. When you have a receive CTCSS tone programmed, only signals that are transmitting the matching CTCSS tone can open your squelch. Same as a repeater that requires tone access. If you don't transmit the matching tone, the repeater can't hear you.
Pressing the [MONI] button overrides any programmed receive CTCSS tone, programmed receive DCS code and SQL setting so that you can hear any FM signal that is in range.

Jim,
This much I knew. But I had it programmed correctly. So it is now obvious to me it was a simplex local communication and they were using a different tone.
It's all good now. The fog is lifting.

If so, they shouldn't be on the repeater's output frequency having a simplex QSO. It's also possible they were on the repeater and the repeater doesn't pass the tone though to output, as someone mentioned earlier.
