[chirp_users] BAOFENG UV-5R8W
First I'd like to say, what an awesome, helpful group, Does anyone have any experience with the BAOFENG UV-5R8W? I Just got one from ABBREE through Amazon. Has anyone had success with any type of software for programing? This is supposedly a three power model. I have tried a few models on CHIRP, the included BAOFENG software and attempted a download from the ABBREE website, all with what I would call negative results. It was a package deal with an included Baofeng cable (Prolific USP) that that Windows 10 said was working. Any help would be appreciated, especially knowing if there is a model I can select on CHIRP that has worked for others. Best Regards, Troy Hunter (Newly licensed)

Hi Troy,
The BF-F8HP is most likely the model to choose. It is used for all of the other UV-5R type radios with 3 power levels. You are most likely going to have to download, install and select the older Prolific device driver.

Thanks a lot MR Johnny on the spot or should I say Rock, I will try that model. I may have already tried it. But you're saying that even though Windows 10 says there is no problem with the cable, there still might be a driver problem? Best Regards, Troy

You might also consider that you have a fake radio. I eventually discovered that I have one. It works but the radio is not programmable via Chirp.
I couldn't believe that there would be such a thing as a fake copy of a Chinese radio. Is that Kama?
I've a BAOFENG UV-5R8W and I can program It without only problem with chirp. I'm using Xubuntu 18.04 and current daily CHIRP version.
Best regards.

Thanks Phil, Are you talking about baofengtech.com? I don't see it there as a UV-5R 8 watts or UV-5R8W. Mine incidentally looks like the older models without the screw heads on the face. More importantly, do you have any advice on how to program it with software? A CHIRP model I can select that you think would work? I've tried several. Best regards, Troy

The model to select for UV-5R like radios with 3 power levels is BF-F8HP.

I just purchased a Baofeng UV-5RMK3X Tri-Band radio from Amazon and I am not sure if this radio is fully programmable by Chirp.
I selected the Baofeng UV-5R radio from the pick list and it does allow me to read the radio and program it except for the 220 frequencies. Is there another version I should use from the pick list to also be able to program the 220 frequencies or this radio not compatible with Chirp?
Thanks,

Hi Herb,
It most likely is by selecting...
Vendor: Radioddity Model: UV-5RX3

Thanks Jim,
That worked. I knew you would have the answer. Thanks for all you do for Chirp, it is greatly appreciated.

Your radio might not be programmable by CHIRP because you have a fake Prolific chip on your cable. Have you checked that out?

Being programmable by Chirp has NOTHING to do with fake chips. That's a Windows driver issue.

Score another point for Linux - it does not care if the chip in your cable is a fake Prolific, it just works anyway! There is also a driver available for Mac that can handle the fake Prolific chips. It seems only Windows has this problem.
