CHIRP worked fine on my 7800, and I have a cable that goes from the 6 way din to USB.

I think you need a different cable. It sounds like you are trying to feed USB to the radio. The radio doesn't have USB. I use a USB to RS-232 serial dongle then the radio cable converts RS-232 to TTL.
Also be aware that Chirp does not work properly with the FT-7800R. Some of the tone modes that the radio has are not supported in Chirp.

ok, Im not really good with computers. I have a yaseu ft 7800 and a hp
laptop with no serial ports. I have a ps2 male to ps2 male cable and a
ps2 to usb adapter. I had to run a virtual com port program and then
chirp. I followed the on screen directions for my radio. I on the
radio it says tx for 2 or 3 seconds and then error. the pc says
cloneing, then error occured, unabe to communicate with radio. failed
to read header (0)
Im thinking its my com port. before i used the virtual port i look
under device manager and there is no section + ports. oh yea Im using
