I think you need a different cable. It sounds like you are trying to
feed USB to the radio. The radio doesn't have USB.
I use a USB to RS-232 serial dongle then the radio cable converts
RS-232 to TTL.
Also be aware that Chirp does not work properly with the FT-7800R.
Some of the tone modes that the radio has are not supported in Chirp.
