OK, I found the problem. The radio model name was 18 chars. When I shortened it the error goes away and File > New loads a blank layout. I have not searched for the name length restriction, but I bet is is 16 chars max.

There's no length restriction, and I don't think that's the problem. What do you think the _actual_ reason related to length is? Meaning, just shortening it and the problem going away seems like it's tickling something else and is not the actual root cause to me. Further, changing the name now will break anyone with a metadata-laden image going forward.
