OK, I found the problem. The radio model name was 18 chars. When I shortened it the error goes away and File > New loads a blank layout. I have not searched for the name length restriction, but I bet is is 16 chars max. I am delaying the patch while I investigate an auto-baud radio id detection issue that appears to be common to several Kenwood rigs.
