[chirp_users] can't figure out how to convert a csv file to an image file
Hey gang, I'll be the first one to admit it, I'm not a computer guru. I know how to navigate around here and there but, when it comes to technical stuff, I get lost pretty easy. I'm new to this site and I'm new to Chirp in general. I've asked a question or two so far on here and have been graciously answered. Well, I'm still trying to learn. I have a Yeasu VX-170 and a new Baofeng UV-5R 8 watt unit. I've managed to load a few frequencies onto the Baofeng and it's all good. But, a buddy just bought the same exact radio as mine and, I wanted to program his to the same frequencies, minus a few that wouldn't apply to him anyways. But, here's the deal. All of files I've saved are csv files. From my brief learning period, csv files CANNOT be uploaded to a radio, only IMG files can. Here's the problem. If I want to upload frequencies, they must be from an image file and, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to convert a csv file to an image file. I'm on about a 6 year old Dell Inspiron running Windows 8.1 on a solid state hard drive. I know, I know, Windows 8.1 is sort of old school but, the reason I have and use it is because, when I had the new SSHD installed, it was at a time when Windows 10 was brand new and many, many folks were not happy with it so, the company that was doing my computer rebuild asked me if I wanted to remain with Windows 8.1. I said, yep, keep it. So, that's the story on that.
Now, how to convert a csv file to an image file so I can alter it and, then upload it to a radio. And please, please, I'm very low tech so, if you explain how to do it, do it as if you're talking to a senior citizen which, I am. Scott
Hi, You may indeed import a CSV file, and probably especially if it is from one model to a different model, you would only want to do the CSV file. The other file, AFAIK, has settings that may not pertain to a different radio, and the CSV is just the channel memories.

Hey, Scott. You need to adjust your mental model of how CHIRP works. Don't think in terms of "converting .csv to .img". Instead, you can 1)download your source radio's data into the CHIRP UI (or load a .img file into the UI) 2) edit it within the UI 3) export the result into a .csv 4) manipulate the .csv 5) load a .img file for the TARGET radio into the CHIRP UI 6) import the .csv file into the UI so as to modify the data in the UI 7) upload the data from the UI into the TARGET radio, (or save the UI onctent as a .img file.)
Yes, some combination of these steps does result in "converting a .csv into a .img", But that's not teh way it's described. Hope this helps.

Lord, I wish we could sit down face to face for half an hour! All would be clear!
"UI" means "User Interface." It means what you see when you run CHIRP and the menu commands available.
For now, you should forget about .CVS files. Just download an image file (.IMG) from your radio, edit it to add repeaters (frequency and PL tone), save it to your hard drive, then upload the edited filed back to your radio.
This is not rocket science, you seem to be way overthinking things!

Well folks, I know, I know, most of you think I was dropped, MANY TIMES as a baby but, I simply cannot make this work. I have created a file, using the appropriate format (spreadsheet type) with the names, frequencies, PL, offset and all the appropriate insertions. And it got saved as a CVS format!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the life of me, I cannot save it as an IMG file. It just won’t happen. I have tried everything I know and tried to save my creation many times but, when I click on save as, it comes up with literally 27 different names and formats but, NOT ONE OF THEM IS IMAGE!!
And, as far as I understand the operations of Chirp, you CANNOT import a CVS file to upload to your radio. ONLY an IMAGE file can be uploaded to a radio. And, as far as IMPORT or EXPORT, it's not available in the save as choices. I’m sorry I’m such a bone head but, I’m just not that good at this stuff. I can navigate around a computer and cut and paste, save stuff, post photos on emails, post photos on forums, and a few other things but, this import and creation of file types, just alludes me.
To most of you, what I’m trying to do is childs play. You can do it in your sleep. It’s a rock and a hard place for me that I can’t go around, over, under, through, etc. Scott

"UI" means "User Interface." It means what you see when you run CHIRP and the menu commands available.
For now, you should forget about .CVS files. Just download an image file (.IMG) from your radio, edit it to add repeaters (frequency and PL tone), save it to your hard drive, then upload the edited filed back to your radio.
This is not rocket science, you seem to be way overthinking things!

Instead, you can 1)download your source radio's data into the CHIRP UI (or load a .img file into the UI) 2) edit it within the UI 3) export the result into a .csv 4) manipulate the .csv 5) load a .img file for the TARGET radio into the CHIRP UI 6) import the .csv file into the UI so as to modify the data in the UI 7) upload the data from the UI into the TARGET radio, (or save the UI onctent as a .img file.)
Yes, some combination of these steps does result in "converting a .csv into a .img", But that's not teh way it's described. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott, Once you have a CVS file you open your chirp program, plug it in to the radio, or rather the opposite, plug it in, and then open chirp, and download from radio. That will pull down your radio's stuff. Then you do import, and browse to the CSV file and enter on that. Once it's imported, it's in the Chirp program, but not yet in the radio. So the next step under "radio" is upload to radio. That will put all that CSV stuff into the radio. That's about all. You never can save a CSV file as an IMG file.
The IMG file "speaks" the data bits your radio's memory needs. The IMG file will only work with your radio. That's why you have to download it from your radio to start. Be careful, you might think that two radios with the same model number would have the same IMG file, but sometimes that's not true, so don't ever use an IMG file from the same model, treat each radio as potentially different.
If that is so, what is the common denominator that will speak to all models? We are going to use a "go between" of a CSV spreadsheet.
Download from your radio to get your radio's IMG file.
Now we're going to EXPORT your frequencies and parameters to CSV spreadsheet first so it can be pasted into another models IMG file. This is what's used to take information from one radio to another.
Once it is in spreadsheet format you can edit it with he spreadsheet program, LibreOffice. DO NOT USE MICROSOFT EXCEL as it introduces errors.
Once you have your data in CSV file, you can rearrange it, and save it. Use a format like 2019repeaters.csv to identify it.
You can then take my ICOM radio, download the IMG file using CHIRP, save with the file name like ICOM_990 to identify it. Now you have the original IMG file backed up. Don't close the file yet. Copy the columns and rows you want to paste into the other radio, I use Ctrl-c. This is in LibreOffice.
Now in CHIRP you still have the IMG file open.
Find the place where you want the information you just copied and paste it in.
Save the file with a new name so that you have the original IMG file and the modified IMG file. I use file names like 20190410yaesumodel.IMG so I know what it is. Save the new IMG file.
Now upload the new IMG file to your radio.
If your friend comes over with a his radio. Download his IMG file with CHIRP. Use CHIRP to select ALL and delete ALL.
He wants a clone of your radio. So in OpenOffice open the 2019repeaters.csv file, select ALL and copy ALL
Go back to CHIRP and paste what you just copied. Save the IMG file with a new name. Now upload that file to his radio
Now he will have a memory clone of your radio.
You use the CSV files as a go between incomparable IMG files.

You can do everything in CHIRP only. Just take your new radio, download the file. Save that in case you need to reset that radio. Download from the radio you want to copy from, select the info you want to put in the first radio, and copy and paste to the first radio. Then write the info to the first radio. All modifications to the info can be done without going to a spreadsheet program. No need to save anything as CSV files. Save the file with a different name, I usually include the date so I know which copy is the latest. You do need to have 2 windows open in CHIRP so you don’t write one image to a different radio. ALWAYS read your radios first, modify the info as needed, then write to the radio. Do not save your downloads as CSV files for normal CHIRP use. When you download from your radios, just hit Save, it will already be in a usable format. Do read the tutorials found on the CHIRP and www.miklor.com websites.

Hey, Scott. You need to adjust your mental model of how CHIRP works. Don't think in terms of "converting .csv to .img". Instead, you can 1)download your source radio's data into the CHIRP UI (or load a .img file into the UI) 2) edit it within the UI 3) export the result into a .csv 4) manipulate the .csv 5) load a .img file for the TARGET radio into the CHIRP UI 6) import the .csv file into the UI so as to modify the data in the UI 7) upload the data from the UI into the TARGET radio, (or save the UI onctent as a .img file.)
Yes, some combination of these steps does result in "converting a .csv into a .img", But that's not teh way it's described. Hope this helps.

I know, I know, Windows 8.1 is sort of old school but, the reason I have and use it is because, when I had the new SSHD installed, it was at a time when Windows 10 was brand new and many, many folks were not happy with it so, the company that was doing my computer rebuild asked me if I wanted to remain with Windows 8.1. I said, yep, keep it. So, that’s the story on that.
Now, how to convert a csv file to an image file so I can alter it and, then upload it to a radio. And please, please, I’m very low tech so, if you explain how to do it, do it as if you’re talking to a senior citizen which, I am.

Go to www.miklor.com for programming tutorials. You should be able to import your CSV file into CHIRP, which should automatically change to the image file.
You can also open your existing file and Save As an image file instead of a CSV.
The CHIRP website should also have tutorials there.
