Hi
I am a new member to the Chirp user group and have a question.
I have downloaded Chirp to Xubuntu 12.04 using Synaptic Package Manager and set it up to try to work with the VX5R. I get an error message after trying to connect. The connection is via a USB to serial adapter which has worked before with the rig. The software is configured to use ttyUSB0 which is correct, I see that /dev/ttyUSB0 has permissions of: crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Sep 23 17:22 /dev/ttyUSB0
So I put myself in the dialout group as such: dialout:x:20:marty
and have rebooted the machine a couple of times since that time. First is the entry in group correct, my login id is marty?
Second has anyone else had this problem with VX5R rigs.
The version of Chirp I am using is 0.1.12, I just loaded it yesterday sometime.
On another not, I have a system running Win XP and loaded Chirp on it too and am getting much the same response. Only on that system I was connecting via serial port. I was able to connect and download and modify using Vx5 Commander and EVE, not very well mind you but it did work.
Any ideas.

In a terminal, what does "groups marty" show? (no quotes). If the listed groups doesn't show dialout, run this command without quotes "sudo usermod -a -G dialout marty" and then groups marty again.

Hi Steve
Here is the response, which shows me in dialout ok.
marty@marty-Laptop:~$ groups marty marty : marty adm dialout cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare marty@marty-Laptop:~$
I did a reset on the rig and tried again and it worked, but the grid doesn't look right so I think once I get the updates in place I will try again.

Marty,
Glad that you're making progress. Follow the previous suggestion and add the PPA to your sources and then you'll get the daily builds.

That version is almost a year old. I don't recall all the VX5 updates since then, but I know there have been a few. One may solve your problem.
The easiest way to stay up to date on *buntu is with the daily development ppa. This is the bleeding-edge new feature branch, not the stable branch, so new features may have some bugs. We do our best to fix these as soon as they are reported. The VX5 driver is very mature at this point.
Here are the commands to add the ppa and install the daily version:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install chirp-daily
What is the error message Chirp gave you (or was it something else that reported the error)?

Hi Tom
I did a full reset and it is now working, I guess I should have done that first off, at least after I had the backup of the rig. I have update the repository information so I should be up to date tomorrow.
