[chirp_users] Open stock config-Noaa Weather
Chirp developers.
Seems I have found a minor bug in trying to open the stock config for the US NOAA Weather frequencies. Tried opening the stock config to import and I get a error and also the listed weather frequencies have some frequencies listed that are not part of the NOAA system. Also the alpha tags are messed up. Just wanted to let the developers know. Included is a saved .csv of the weather frequencies that I pulled up and also a debug file.

Todd,
I have no issues opening the "NOAA Weather Alert.csv" stock config.
I know this stock config was recently reworked (by "recently" I mean in the last year or so). I just did some quick research to validate the frequencies and alpha tags and the following is what I found.
From wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather_radio)
<quote> The "official" NOAA WX numbering scheme does not increase in frequency order because the weather channels were created gradually over the years. 162.55 MHz was at first the only frequency (so was thus WX1), then 162.4 (WX2) and 162.475 (WX3) were added later to prevent RF interference. The others mainly came into use in the 1990s in less-populated rural, areas and as fill-in broadcast translators relaying an existing station or sending a separate, more localized broadcast into remote or mountainous areas, or those areas with reception trouble. </quote>
The following is from the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MARINE PRODUCTS VIA NOAA WEATHER RADIO page (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/wxradio.htm)
<quote> NOAA Weather Radio Frequencies 162.400 MHz (WX2) 162.425 MHz (WX4) 162.450 MHz (WX5) 162.475 MHz (WX3) 162.500 MHz (WX6) 162.525 MHz (WX7) 162.550 MHz (WX1) Channel numbers, e.g. (WX1, WX2) etc. have no special significance but are often designated this way in consumer equipment. Other channel numbering schemes are also prevalent. </quote>
And also from the same page
<quote> Many NOAA Weather Radio receivers are also programmed for three additional frequencies; 161.650 MHz (marine VHF Ch 21B), 161.775 MHz (marine VHF Ch 83B) and 163.275 MHz. </quote>
So according to the above, the stock config looks fine to me.

ok Jim,
What in the world is the PA and number in the alpha supose to stand for. and adding the marine channels into the NOAA is confusing to others thinking there is new channels for NOAA on which those frequencies should be under the marine and not under the NOAA Alert. Just all very confusing.

Just an additional note to clarify the usage of the extra channels. Note that some are Canadian and the other is depreciated.
Many NOAA Weather Radio receivers are also programmed for three additional frequencies; 161.650 MHz (marine VHF Ch 21B), 161.775 MHz (marine VHF Ch 83B) and 163.275 MHz. The first two frequencies are used by Canada for marine weather broadcasts. 163.275 MHz was used by the National Weather Service for earlier weather broadcasts and later for internal coordination in the event of a power outage but is no longer in active use.

I just tried opening the NOAA weather stock config and also had an error window pop up. It says:
1 errors during open: Column number mismatch on line 2
It also shows channels names like WX1PA7.
This is with CHIRP daily-20160929 on Xubuntu 16.04.1

Interesting. I just did the same and had the same result. “Column number mismatch on line 2"
Only I’m on OS X 10.11.6 and CHIRP daily-20160419
GTK 2.24.10 PyGTK 2.22.0 Python 2.7.2
If this is indeed some sort of bug, it’s an older one.
I too have WX1PA7 shown for the column “Name” All through Location 7 have the same “PA” characters followed by a numeral in the name column. Beginning with location 8, which also happens to be WX8, and thru WX10 all columns appear normal.
Forgive me if this isn’t helpful. But I can confirm the behavior, and it does seem odd.

I just did the same, no problems, listed Alpha Tags of NOAA1-7 with right freqs.
I use Windows 10 Version 1607 Chirp Dailey 20160924.

Exactly. I believe that once you install CHIRP the first time, the the stock_configs folder is created and populated with the current complement of stock config files. From that point on, I don't think this folder is ever updated in case you have made edits to these files or added your own. This is why Bill still has the older file with only 7 frequencies instead of the latest stock config with 10 frequencies.
So if the stock config file ever got corrupted some how, it would never be automatically replaced. It does look like there was a change made about a month ago that was to "fix" an import error: Remove spurious newline causing stock config import error. Fixes #3743
I uninstalled CHIRP. I then removed the CHIRP folder that contains the chirp.config, the debug.log and the stock_configs folder. Then I installed the CHIRP daily build that was created this morning so now I have brand new CHIRP installation as if it was never on my computer before. The NOAA Weather Alert stock config loads and imports just fine.
You don't have to do anything so drastic. If you think you have a bad "NOAA Weather Alert.csv" (which it apparently was from February to September), just download the latest from the CHIRP repository to replace the one you have.

Jim, If I've got the right NOAA Freqs. do I need to still do the uninstall you speak of here Or just download the newest Stock Config? I really don't need the 3 Freqs. now in there. Oh, I'd already had installed today's Daily before seeing this post. If so, what is best path to take? Well Chirp work with the Uniden BCD 536 HP?
I'd stick with the free Sentinel program for the BCD 536 HP. The memory layout is very unlike other scanners (except of course the 436).

Are there any scanners Chirp can program. Would be nice to not have to deal with maintaining Windows just to program scanners.

No. There are no scanners on the list of supported radio models. http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

Would it be worthwhile to make an attempt. I only have one scanner but always had to program it manually. I did buy their serial adapter so I could plug it in and see if I can get any data out of it.

Actually, there is a user stock_configs folder, and a system stock_configs folder. I believe, that the first time chirp is run, the system folder contents are copied to the user folder. The actual locations for these vary depending on operating system, but are in very predictable locations.
