[chirp_users] Problem reported with Windows download?
Hi all,
I've been using Chirp successfully for a while with my various radios. Recently there was a discussion on the VX-7 list about ADMS-1G programming software, and I suggested that the person try Chirp, since it worked well in my experience, and is free.
One person on the list replied as follows, suggesting that there is malware in the Chirp download. Since I don't have a Windows machine, there's no way I could verify that. Is there any possibility that the Chirp download got hijacked? Or is this guy just spreading FUD to get people to buy other software?
Thanks & 73,
-Eben / K6EBN

DANGER!!
I just got a bunch of crapware forced in from the CHIRP download.: "7-zip", "VAFMusic", "DealPly", and "MyPcBackup". Some of it resists uninstall. One leads to what looks like a hostageware site!!
Some sort of unwanted IE toolbar came in as well..
DANGER!!

I've downloaded and installed chirp for over 6 months on my windows machine, each time there is a new daily build version and my malware and also virus scan has never had a problem with chirp. My downloads and installs get checked at each install, regardless of daily build or stable build.

Hi
If someone were to run across Chirp on a site other than Chirp's site I could believe someone could put some things in the download/install that were and are not in the official site. Anymore if I am downloading some "free" software or even updates to some other software I always look for the fine print of loading some toolbars for something I don't want. I also go though out Window's PC's and remove unwanted software on about a monthly basis.

It also matters where you downloaded it from. Was it downloaded from chirp.danplanet.com? Is he sure that he doesnt have a pre-existing virus/infection (dns-redirect,etc) which attaches or replaces anything downloaded w/ malware? Is he sure that he doesnt have some sort of scamware which alerts you that you are infected by some nasties with every step of your daily internet journey (and to pay 50 EURO by western union, etc to remove)?

I've never had any alarms go off in Windows, I've updated with a daily build a couple times and use the best anti-virus software known to man from ESET with daily virus and malware signature updates. If you download from: http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download#Windows I would bet my first born child that it will be free of any malware. One other thing to consider, some lesser well designed anti virus software that does real time heuristic scans could give a false positive warning. I've seen this on several occasions over the last 15 years.
