[chirp_users] Baofeng UV-82HP
I've looked high and low trying to figure this out:
Using Chirp I have the tx power set on my radio for each channel. Now my radio won't let me change the tx power via the menu on the radio. It changes initially but reverts back immediately.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'd like to be able to change power whenever I want to.
Thanks
You have to save the settings again. When you change channels, it will revert back to the old setting. You may have to erase the channel and reenter all the info, including the separate receive and transmit frequencies. Jardy Dawson WA7JRD Ham Radio

Hi Jesse,
You aren't doing anything wrong. Even though the menus will let you go through the motions, you cannot change any part of a memory channel's setting in MR (channel) mode. That is how these radios work.
The only per-channel settings that can be updated at all are the TX frequency, menu 12 (T-DCS) and menu 13 (T-CTCS) and that must be done in VFO (frequency) mode. To change any one of the other 7 per-channel setting at the radio would require you to erase the channel and program it back from scratch with the new value.
See the "Reference for UV-82 Radios" to find out what menu work in what modes. http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_MenuDef.php
You can temporarily toggle the power level by tapping the [#] key. When you leave the channel in any way, the power level will revert back to its programmed value.

Hi. I do not own a UV-82 Hp, but I do have a UV- 82 and I believe they use the same chip set. If I understand your question correctly, I think you're saying you'd like to be able to toggle between High and Low power while on the same memory channel. This won't happen. I'm pretty sure the radio will automatically revert to whatever power level that was set when that channel was programmed. If you want to have multiple power selections on the same channel whilst in Memory mode, I think your only option is to separately program the same channels / frequencies in with the various power settings you want. To change power you will have to go to the memory location that has the desired power level setting pre-programmed.
Changing the power setting "on the fly" only works in VFO mode. This is pretty typical for Baofeng / Pofung radios.

You can temporary change your power level by tapping the # pound button

It is not weird. It is how they work. You cannot change the power level of a programmed channel. You can only temporarily toggle it between power levels with the [#] key. To change it permanently, you have to either reprogram it with software or erase and reprogram at the radio. All the UV-5R/UV-82 type radios behave this way.
