installer.exe will install Chirp like any other program.
win32.zip is what some people call a "standalone app." Just run it, no installation needed.

Have there been any Daily Builds since the 11th? Haven't got notice of any. Thanks, Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Hayward To: Discussion of CHIRP Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 11:39 AM Subject: Re: [chirp_users] New Daily Build

Sometimes they are daily, sometimes weekly, but we get them when Dan has some time. (I wanted to say "when Dan gets sometimes" but that did not look or sound right.) :-)

Thanks. I've tried both current files now (.exe and .zip 20130111), plus various older versions, and I cannot get Chirp to run on my desktop PC. I can run Chirp without any problems on my laptop and my netbook, but on the desktop (windows 7 Pro 32 bit) when I try to run either the installed version or the stand-alone version and I've tried a number of builds, it appears to start to load, then after a few seconds the little Windows spinning circle thingy just disappears. Nothing shows in Task Manager. What could be causing this?

Whatever it is, I suspect the debug.log explains it. See http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/How_To_Report_Issues for how to find it.

Thanks Tom.
I thought that since it wouldn't start, that it wouldn't create the log, but it has. Since I appear to be the only one suffering from this problem, I won't bother the developers at this point, but I'll paste the debug log below ..
"CHIRP daily-20130111 on WinVista/7 (Python 2.7.2) Traceback (most recent call last): File "chirpw", line 50, in <module> File "chirpui\config.pyo", line 108, in get File "chirpui\config.pyo", line 31, in __init__ File "ConfigParser.pyo", line 297, in read File "ConfigParser.pyo", line 504, in _read ConfigParser.MissingSectionHeaderError: File contains no section headers. file: C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Roaming\CHIRP\chirp.config, line: 1 '\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x0 0\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00"
The string of \x00's goes on for about 20 more lines then there's nothing after that. Looks like the key is the Missing Section Header. Can any user throw some light on that one?

Can you tr running it as administrator and see if it behaves differently?
Good thought Shawn, but same result and same debug log unfortunately.

In the same folder as the debug log, do you see a chirp.config file?
if so, what are the contents?
Yes, but as before, it contains nothing. Its a 1kb empty file.

Tom and Shawn, thanks for your suggestions in getting Chirp going on my PC. As a last resort, I copied the Chirp folder from the APPDATA location from my laptop and pasted the whole folder over the same folder on the desktop and guess what? It loaded! I imagine it had something to do with the previously empty config file since the debug file is overwritten when Chirp loads, but anyway, its now working!

It looks like your config is somehow corrupt. Deleting it--or moving it, as it sounds like you've tried--should resolve the issue.
We may be able to make Chirp more robust so it ignores a corrupt config file by reverting to defaults.
