Is there a way to run Chirp Legacy and Chirp next side by side without uninstalling/installing them?
There is at least one thing for the BaoFeng radios I use that can be set in Legacy but not in Next (I opened a ticket about it).
Thanks,
Eric
I have both installed and can run on same computers on both MacOS and Win. macOS is simple, just rename one if the apps. I renamesd the Next one to Chirp-Next before putting it in Applications directory. Windows was a bit more involved, but not too difficult either. I installed legacy normally, then copied the directory to a new location and made new shortcuts. I think I might’ve let the uninstaller run to remove the original and also so it wouldn’t be in Add/Remove Programs. I then installed Next normally. I can now run either or even both on Win also..

I assume that you are running CHIRP on a Windows PC. I've been doing it here since CHIRP-next was released and development of classic CHIRP was ended.
I uninstalled classic CHIRP and then installed CHIRP-next using the installer since it will continue to be updated. It can continue to be updated using the installer as new builds are released.
Then I unZIPped the win32.zip of the last build of classic CHIRP to a convenient location on my hard drive. Then I right clicked the 'chirpw.exe' file in the extracted folder and moved it to my Desktop and renamed it 'chirp legacy 20221217'. What makes this work is that CHIRP has always been a portable application. It doesn't have to be installed. I used this feature all the time to make available a older build to do testing.

At the same time? Dunno.
If you don't want to run them at the same time, you can create a second login/user on your system and install each version under their own user.

Yep. At the same time. I don't do it so much now, but there have been times in the past when I had classic CHIRP and CHIRP-next windows open on my computer at the same time.

Both work fine even running side-by-side. The nice thing is that Chirp doesn’t seem to take control of the port the entire time chirp is running, but only during the read/write sequence, which allows both to work fine side-by side. The only think you can’t do, is simultaneously read (or write) from both programs to same port and radio simultaneously, but why would anyone even try someting so silly…. :-)

I always download the zip file, as it is the easiest for me to run on all my computers. Just unzip to a version-specific dir, and off I go. I usually delete the older ones as I unzip the newer one, but sometimes I forget, and then I have several versions unzipped at the same time. I have a named dir that I use on all my computers for non-installed programs. It's a simple matter to run any version. I had the legacy and -next unzipped at the same time for many months while I tested -next. No problems, as expected.

Wow, whether or not the description “Standalone application” had been there and I just overlooked when I downloaded legacy years ago, I had assumed the zip archive was probably just some sort of setup that was zipped up and not simply just a zip of a fully working chirp directory.
Yep, disregard my previous post about installing just to copy the working directory nonsense, lol. The zipped directory runs great. May still want to make a shortcut to chirpw.exe to put in Windows startup Menu if use the startup menu, but works perfectly even side-by-side with chirp next. I have both Legacy and Next running right now, next to each other, on a split-sceeen..
