Hi All
I have had Chirp for quite a few years but don't let that fool you, I know nothing about it. I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R+Plus radios a while ago and a friend used Chirp to clone his radio and then to set my two up. I have used it a few times as I have recommended the Baofeng radios to others and then I have used Chirp to clone mine and set theirs up. I am not sure what has happened but I have updated to a Toshiba laptop, I've just updated that to Windows 10, and I downloaded the latest Chirp today. It's been a while since I last used Chirp and a friend has just purchased two Baofeng UV-5RTP radios and asked me to set them up. When I opened Chirp I opened my radio image file and connected the new radio. I get a COM 5 port error and that's it. I tried hooking my radio up but get the same error. Not sure whether it's relevant but I used the same original data cable as I did for my, and others, radios. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Mick.

Most programming cables with a Prolific type USB-to-TTL chip require that the user over-ride the incompatible device driver that is automatically installed by Windows with the older Prolific v3.2.0.0 (v2.0.2.1 for Windows XP) device driver. Then when the upgrade to Windows 10 is done, the device driver is updated to that latest (incompatible) version again. You will have to downgrade it back to the Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver again.

Hi Jim. Thanks for your help Mate. It has solved that issue and Chirp cloned my radio without any problem (had to change from COM 5 to 4). Now I plug the UV-5RTP in and it goes to start to upload but then I get "An error has occurred - Radio did not respond. Something in my brain is telling me I should be doing something else to prepare the radio but since my stroke the brain doesn't always work that well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Kind regards, Mick.

Mick,
I'm going to take a guess that you are not trying upload a CHIRP Radio Image that came from the UV-5RTP. The UV-5RTP is a radio with 3 power levels and need to be accessed with CHIRP using the BF-F8HP model selection. So you must download from this radio with the correct model selection, edit the channels and setting, then upload it back.
Jim KC9HI
Hey Jim thank you. It's amazing what knowledge does for a person. As you may have guessed I don't have any regarding this sort of thing, I'm just trying to help a Mate out. So I have now cloned the 5RTP and if I understand what you said I have to manually edit it and then upload back to the radio. I can't just upload the 5R+ image? Also, would I be correct in saying that Chirp only accesses the UHF band on the radio? I would love to get in and learn about this but since my stroke the memory is not that good. Thanks again Mate, it is greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Mick.

Michael,
You can't upload images from other models reliably. if you save the file as a CSV then you can import after you read your target radio. That is how I do it with several different chirp supported models. I read the radio. Import my master .csv file. Chirp doesn't access any band over another. It simply manages memory and simple settings. You can program both VHF and UHF with chirp and then write it to the radio.

You can also have the uploaded file open from the source radio, upload the target radio (to get a good file). Then select all in the source, paste over the memory locations in the target file (make sure you delete the target radio memory locations first). Worked great when I wanted the same frequencies in my BF-F8+ and my UV-82HP.

No. I didn't say that. You have to upload an image that came from your UV-5R TP. It does not have to be manually edited. CHIRP will allow you to import channels from many sources.
I can't just upload the 5R+ image?
Correct. You can only upload an image that came from your radio or a radio with the exact same firmware version.
As already mentioned, you can... - copy and paste from a UV-5R+ tab to the UV-5R TP tab - import from a .CSV file.
But a more robust way of doing it would be to import the .IMG file from UV-5R+ into your UV-5R TP tab.
Also, would I be correct in saying that Chirp only accesses the UHF band on the radio?
You are incorrect. CHIRP will allow you to program the VHF and UHF bands.
I would love to get in and learn about this but since my stroke the memory is not that good. Thanks again Mate, it is greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Mick.

I’ve got everything working till now I get the “Incorrect ‘Model’ selected”. I’ve selected the Baofeng 5R and my friend’s are 5RTP so I’m not sure why it doesn’t recognise them. Steve could it be because I’m using my data cable not the friend’s?

Thanks John.
Can’t see anything there for “Incorrect Model”.
Kind regards,
Mick.

Rick, That’s a common error message. The possible causes can be found at http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_ErrorMess.php Hope this helps…

Hi (Sorry I couldn’t see a name on the email).
Kind regards,
Mick.

Hi All
I have had Chirp for quite a few years but don’t let that fool you, I know nothing about it. I purchased two Baofeng UV-5R+Plus radios a while ago and a friend used Chirp to clone his radio and then to set my two up. I have used it a few times as I have recommended the Baofeng radios to others and then I have used Chirp to clone mine and set theirs up. I am not sure what has happened but I have updated to a Toshiba laptop, I’ve just updated that to Windows 10, and I downloaded the latest Chirp today. It’s been a while since I last used Chirp and a friend has just purchased two Baofeng UV-5RTP radios and asked me to set them up. When I opened Chirp I opened my radio image file and connected the new radio. I get a COM 5 port error and that’s it. I tried hooking my radio up but get the same error. Not sure whether it’s relevant but I used the same original data cable as I did for my, and others, radios. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Mick.
