[chirp_users] Prolific Chip On Windows 11
I plugged a Baofeng programming cable into a laptop running Windows 11 but Win11 does not have the drivers to support it. Anyone have a programming cable that works on both Windows 10 and 11?

Wow, I just went to the Miklor website to check it out and the wealth of information on there is incredible! I should have visited that website a long time ago.

Someone will probably reply with a more complete answer but the short form is that the current drivers can detect counterfeit prolific part (and FTDI, for that matter) and refuse to work with them. Your cable is almost certainly built with a counterfeit chip.
What you need to do is point your web-browser at miklor.com and dig down to the instructions for downloading and installing the Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver, which predates the counterfeit detection, and use that. Also lock it in place so that Windows doesn't replace it again with the newer rev.

How does one "lock" a driver in place. Some people have suggested shutting Windows Update off after installing version v3.2.0.0, but I'd rather not do that. Thanks.

Windows 10 is stubborn about this. Windows 11 is even more stubborn. The driver will almost always be updated to the latest version when other updates are installed. Most of the time the driver that you want (v3.2.0.0) is still installed, you just have to go to Device Manager and select it again. But there are times when the driver you want (v3.2.0.0) is uninstalled and you will have to install and select it again. So keep the v3.2.0.0 installer handy.

I got this one off Amazon and it works fine on Win11.

The PL2303HXA and PL2303TA chips that are common in programming cables are considered EOL (end of life) by the Prolific company. The driver that they supply to Microsoft to be installed by Windows is written to ignore the HXA and TA chips. To use your current programming cable all that you have to do is download, install and select the older (from 2007) Prolific v3.2.0.0 driver. This is what I have been doing for over 10 years. A link for the driver and instructions for installing it are on the Miklor website. https://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
Another solution is to purchase another programming cable that was manufactured with a USB-to-Serial chip from any other chip vendor besides Prolific (FTDI, Silicon Labs and WCH). It is rarely mentioned in a listing which chip is in the cable when a Silicon Labs or WCH chip is used. It is almost always mentioned listing when an FTDI chip is used. So I recommend looking for a programming cable with an FTDI chip.
