[chirp_users] How to use the software
Hello, I downloaded and installed the software. I am able to access the radio but I need help with all the column headings. What is Tone mode, TSQL, DTCS, none and cross? Tone ToneSqu DTCS Code DTCS RX Code DTCS Pol MN, RR, RN, NR Cross Mode, tone->Tone, Tone->DTCS, DTCS->Tone, ->Tone, DTCS->, DTCS->DTCS Duplex none, -, +, split, off Offset Mode FM, NFM Skip
If I just want to listen to a channel and not talk on it want should the above setting be set to? If I want to use it for my RR job what do I set the above too? I know the frequencys. What is type "BM" and mode "FMN" on radio reference mean?
Thanks for your help. David
to listen, you could just program the frequencies with no offset, to use it on the facility's system, you will need to know things like PL tones(some repeaters require a tone to open the repeater to reduce accidental outside interference), frequency offset(repeaters receive on one channel while transmitting on another, gotta have it) etc, but if all you are doing is listening, the repeater broadcast freq should(but may require more settings) be all you need. typically either the chief site safety man or engineering head will have those settings On May 13, 2015 7:07 PM, "David" weather@lightingunlimited.com wrote:

Yes its true many repeaters require the off set. I knew that, so that clears up those 2 columns freq and off set. Now how about the others what do they do? If a radio system does not use a setting I do not see a way to turn that setting off in Chirp.

Hi David,
While this list service is about Chirp and not a radio user support forum, and since I'm not much use for the proper questions, I can tell you that if all you want to do is listen, you can ignore all these settings. They should be off.
Learning about the radio operational features is available from a variety of sources though many of the user manuals don't as good a job of explaining as we'd like.
Best wishes, Tom

Yes I understand this user group is about Chirp. And my questions pertain to CHIRP. I don't understand the alphabet soup for each column.
I want to listen to some channels and set up to talk on other channels. Thanks

To listen only set the following:
Frequency = {the frequency that you want to listen to} Duplex = off
The miklor.com website has a guide to the columns and examples as they relate to the UV-5R http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_CHIRP.php#guides
The there is a similar guide for the columns available in the documentation area for the CHIRP website http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Documentation
